Title: Movies and assorted crazyness in high school
Post by: Saikoyu on 01 Apr 2011, 16:54
So yeah, this came up in the TonyG thread where we got a bit off topic about Armageddon (the movie) and I menctioned that I saw it first in hight school science class, which rather naturally got this response.

Um -- I'm tempted to ask why they showed that movie in HS science classes, but yeah, another topic.

Which made me realize that apparently some places have not been introduced to the fine American (or at least Seattle) tradition of teachers going, "We don't have anything to do, here, watch a movie, it has [Insert class topic here] in it."  So here is the list, due to complete bordom at work, of movies I watched in high school.

First off, showing Armageddon in both physics and chemistry the next year (both were taught by the same teacher).  As I remember, it was a two hour class period (some demented thing my school did), and the day before holoween at least one of the two times it was shown.  I remember becuase she was in costume, as a typical 90's high school goth, complete with safety pin earings and ripped black cloths.  It was also rather disturbing, since she was about 40 at least.  Anyway, she showed it becuase we were at the end of the week and there was nothing else scheduled pretty much.

Other movies and assorted odd things:

My freshman (first year) english and history teacher had a bullwhip and once actually used it (in the hall and not on anyone).  She really liked Indiana Jones.  We also watched Romeo and Juilet in her class, but that made some sense, even if it was the version with naked Romeo ass in it.  What didn't make sense to me was going on a field trip to watch the Leonardo DeCaprio version in the theater.  But hey, got out of classes.

My French teacher on days at the end of the year or during parent-teacher night would show this skit from Kids in the Hall (80 MADtv like thing I think), with a very annoying french teacher, who later in Paris tried to correct a real frenchman's accent and gets beat down.  Couldn't find it on youtube, but funny as hell.  She also showed some of the Lion King in French once, which was also funny.

My senior year history teacher showed Three O'clock High near the end of the year, mostly becuase we were seniors I suppose.  For those who don't know, its one of those after school specials where the nerdy "hero" gets challenged to a fight by the school bully at 3 after school, and the various things he does to try and avoid it.

Looking back on it, I wonder how I actually learned anything.  Anyone else in the US have something like this, or were my teachers in Seattle just lazy/crazy?

I took Japanese in high school, and our teacher (an old Japanese man) put on "The Karate Kid" three times in a single year whenever he didn't have a lesson planned, for no reason other than it was his favorite movie.

Learned how to make Rum in grade 12 chem, learned how to hotwire a older model Jeep in Shop class.  Learned how to Pick locks from grade 9 math teacher.

My math teachers always had us watch "Speed" when we had half days or substitutes.  Pop quiz hot shot, if a bus is going 50 mph in Los Angeles, and Speed is a two hour movie, what the **** does this have to do with math!?

Not as bad as me getting 100% on a math test once by marking random answers on the scantron sheet.

Drizz, that sounds MUCH more relevant (and useful) than watching terrible films that pass as entertainment because the teacher can't be arsed to do his job. (FWIW, I don't recall any of my teachers doing this sort of thing -- not to say we didn't find ways to goof off anyway...)

Learned how to make paracetamol in chemistry class. Was fun, though even with a 92% accurate result, we were advised not to consume it. I actually had a headache and all this hand made white powder was so tempting suddenly. :(

Ah yes, and we also saw Quest for Fire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quest_for_Fire_%28film%29) in elementary school. Was kind of disturbing, I think I puked at some point.

PS : Lion King in french is worth it just for Jean Reno voicing the dad.

I'm not sure on all of the relevant statutes of limitations, so I just don't disclose some of the more educational aspects of my high school years. ;)

Oh, well thats No Fun.  Most of those are 5 years.  Atleast in Canada.

There was a couple of odd pregnancys in the grade 12 classes at my school.  Till the old Chem teacher was fired.  the new one is the guy who taught use the rum.

Of course some of us already knew how to make it and brought our own Kit in.  lol - Lets say that the Teacher and Us had a good lunch time Rum and Coke.

If I knew for sure that 5 years was the limit here... erm, I'd be way past that. :P

There was a couple of odd pregnancys in the grade 12 classes at my school.

Just a couple?  I'm impressed.  Two of my classmates were pregnant with their second kids in my senior year, and another had her third a few weeks after graduation.  Those stand out: I lost count of the number of girls (and guys, who dropped out to farm and work marginal jobs) who would have graduated with me if they hadn't who quit school because of pregnancies.  The scary part to me was that not all of them were unplanned.  There were too many hedge churches where I grew up whose congregations were convinced it was just fine if kids got married at 13 (to each other, not to 40 somethings), and if Missouri or Arkansas didn't approve, well, then it was time to take a vacation in Mississippi.

But back on the subject ... yes.  Most of my classes showed movies on Fridays.  Not Armageddon, since the movie came out after I graduated, and I vaguely remember there being some argument with administration over whether or not my science teacher could show Terminator.  He won, but he usually did.  In some years, the kids he coached through doing science fair projects earned more money for the school than its basketball team.

The majority of my teachers weren't bad. A number of them were actually quite good, though I imagine my experience with them would have been different if I hadn't been a motivated student, and if I hadn't had the consistent message at home that it was my job to be one.

I think we watched Ronja (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088015/) in the primary school.

Three co (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108394/)lo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111495/)urs (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111507/) at some point.

That was in 12 years of school.

People waited to be preggers after they graduated.

There was no such thing as unplanned classes in my school.

But this was Finland.

It's odd. We must be doing something right to be one of the top countries in casual sex and yet not have a lot of teen pregnancies (there was none in the two high schools I saw when I was that age and I have never seen a pregnant teen elsewhere, though I've heard about them). Just thought about that oddity.

As for movies, yeah we watched Ronja as well... but also Schindler's List, Les Quatre cents coups and I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

in teh UK, sex education by schools is often a bit of too little too late, with most of it being aimed at 15-16 year olds, when at that point, usually the ones that are most at risk of such things have already been exposed to any number of half-truths, falsehoods and bad habits, regarding chances of conception, contraception methods, disease transmission, etc. "condoms make it less fun", "you can't get pregnant standing up", and so on.

Not helped by various outcrys from different groups. e.g. the Section 28 shenanigans a while back.

Or how the vaccination against that virus that causes cervical cancer, that was being given free to schoolgirls in Scotland, was being opposed because it would make the vaccinated girls promiscuous.

it is also complicated further in Scotland by the existence of the seperate schools for Roman Catholics, which have their own restrictions about what they are allowed to teach.

E.g. the non-denominational schools, they have these dolls that are fitted with various instrumentation. Pupils are given the doll to care for for a period of time, and the doll records things like how long it takes for it to be picked up when it starts crying, and various other things, like if people yell at it and stuff. Looking after it is quite hard work.

The RC schools were not allowed to run the doll program, due to objections from the priests.

Guess which schools have the higher pregnancy rates.

I went to a magnet high school, which means a public school that had admission requirements and a specific academic focus (science / engineering / mathematics in my case). So the students that attended generally had lots of motivation for their education and, at least at the time, I recall no teen pregnancies while I was there.

Not that I didn't know any teen mothers, but those tended to come from the poor neighborhood where I grew up.

I recall no pregnancies cases either for me (France). Though I have heard of one someday, I think. Maybe rumor, maybe not.

Some teachers in my school sometimes passed my classmates' ultrasound pictures around in class.  Not as a 'this is what a baby looks like' lesson, but as part of encouraging classroom congratulations of my pregnant classmate.

This always made me feel uncomfortable as hell.

We always watched films at the end of term. Sometimes in the middle, too. ^^ Memorably, we watched If.... (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063850/) in RE (Religious Education) class.

Still, I went to a private school, so things were sometimes a bit different. In many cases, we had rattled through the entire two year syllabus in the first year to give the teachers some time to concentrate on actual education.

It wasnt that bad. We watched it along with Beauty and the Beast(I think) in my HS French class.

Saw both versions of Romeo and Juliet. Watched the classic one in class then took a trip to see the Leo version. Also watched Macbeth in my senior English class.

I would say the most constructive thing I did was build a trophy case in one of my shop classes. At the end of the year that teacher and the beauty arts teacher(hairdresser) took their classes to a theme park called Dollywood. They did it pretty much every year, and since I was friends with the shop teachers son I got to go all 4 years of school whether I was in shop or not. :D

Not a cheeseburger-inhaling yank but sometimes one end-of-term half-days our history teacher would play the Germans episode from Fawlty Towers
