Title: What other games are you playing?
Post by: Lunarisse Aspenstar on 13 Sep 2014, 12:53
After looking back a couple pages I didn't see a thread like this so please humor me if I missed one ;)

Right now I am playing Civilization V (with all expansions/updates) with my kids. it's one of the rare games that still has a hot seat mode so there's always a lot of chat and discussion (and bargaining) as it goes!

Crusader Kings II. Occasionally The Old Republic. Not much else. Waiting eagerly for Dragon Age Inquisition.

Just finished Metro 2033 Redux and starting up Metro: Last Light Redux.

Russians really can't be beat in post-apocalyptica and Metro really shines in that regard. As games go, it's very linear and has some pacing issues in the beginning, especially as you're being escorted around and never really get to mess around on your own. The atmosphere is just absolutely unbeatable though. The claustrophobic tunnels. The hectic pace of the fights and just knowing you have nowhere to go if you fuck it all up. Having to make sure you have the filters for your gas mask (and that you replace it if it gets damaged in combat, and for that matter ensuring you don't wear it needlessly for that very reason) and the sheer stress of having to wipe the blood and gore off it so you can even see the damn enemies in the first place.

The whole design of the weapons and UI is frankly brilliant. No need for an ammo counter when you can just look at the weapon to determine how much you have left. I also love the dual "ammo" function of pneumatic weapons as you need to both keep the actual projectiles and the pressure up. Having to hand charge your light and seeing it dim as you spend power is another nice touch.

Storytelling is a bit rushed and heavy-handed exposition, but that may just be me as I've read (and loved!) the books.

It's all surpassed by the sheer atmosphere though. I've never been so pants-wettingly afraid in an FPS before as I was skulking around the Library, staring down Librarians and very carefully trying to keep them in sight while moving around. (Dr Who fans will finally get to experience the terror of the weeping angels, I can tell you that much).

Graphics wise... well, the Redux versions are bloody gorgeous if you've got the computer for it. Especially Last Light. The lighting when you're wearing that gas mask is just unbelievably good. The character models and animation can be a little bit yesteryear, but I really don't have much to complain about. The games (again, especially Last Light) just look amazing. They really went all out on lighting here.

Overall, I can't recommend these games enough, if you don't mind a highly linear shooter with fantastic level designs and a truly oppressive tension permeating every solo venture you make.

Forgot to add vidya. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2djDE_kwH3Q)One of the best trailers I've seen, with a right proper gut punch in the end. Russian grimdark at its best.

TRYING to play RIFT but it's under heavy DDOS right now so no dice there.
Minecraft as they just (not sure when) dropped a large patch/update.

Honestly I'm searching for a game to keep me interested right now but not having much luck.

I log into EVE on occasion, and quickly get bored and move on to something else.

Only game I really play right now is League of Legends. I just resubbed to eve today, so I will try to log on more often on that, but quite frankly the main reason I played eve was to PvP and PvE, but my laptop makes it rather difficult and unfun to do those things. I'll try anyway.

Just started playing a little Crusader Kings II. Paradox games seem to be easy to pick up and play for a little bit and set back down, which is always nice. The two games I am waiting for are Hearts of Iron 4 and Project CARS.

On and off, in no particular order or preference:
- Star Trek Online
- Skyrim
- Halo: Spartan Assault (bored, picked it up on Steam)
- Peggle
- Mass Effect (all)
- Audiosurf (both)
- Shitposting Online (aka, eve-o forums)

Alternating sporadically between The Witcher 2 (mainly because of trailer for next instalment and need for grimdark fantasy antihero) and inching my way towards goal of 100% completion of Arkham Origins.

Also picked up Destiny, which is surprisingly satisfying. Don't believe the hype - it's nothing groundbreaking in terms of online FPS. But that said, the gameplay is familiar and solid, nicely polished and designed so you can play it in short 20-30 minute sessions of solo PvE, co-op PvE or team based PvP if all you've got is that kind of time to waste. Which is perfect for me at present.

Blame Bioware and every other CRPG developer since the dawn of computing for conditioning you to believe giant rats are enemies only suitable for tutorial missions set in some poor innkeeper's basement.

Now you've looked into the Void and understand the dark TRUTH of your DS toon's tenuous existence - that you are the tutorial mob and the Rat PCs have been sent to clear you out.

Well, when the PC is actually set up..

Uhm.. playing...

*7DTD Alpha (wtb moar zombie apocalypse survivor buddies!)

*Second Life (HEY ARI THATS NOT A GAME) where I feast on Drama in a sort of bachnallian festival that outshines anything generated in EVE, without even needing to actively participate in it.  I also go clothes shopping. ;) (This is also installed on the lappy.  So if I'm not in eve I'm in  there. and afaik only one person here can chase me onto that grid, muhaha)

On the laptop atm, I'm playing Skyrim deluxe on the PS3 (lappy "runs" skyrim, but hilariously at .5 FPS. didnt think that as possible but there you go! :D), which involves me walking very slowly and/or staggering around like a drunk, as my hands do not handle console controls well.  I'd like to blame lack of practice, but requires a bit more fine tuned movement on the little thumbsticks done quickly than I can manage.  So lookout.  The drunken Dragonborn has arrived.  and OF COURSE I AM AN IMPERIAL! AMARR VICTOR! .. and didn't feel like playing Blackguard for this go-round in the Elder Scrolls series.

...Skyrim, still. I finished my Dunmer playthrough around level 41, then uninstalled and reinstalled to get a realism/survival playthrough going with a Bosmer.

There has been... significantly more quicksaving and reloading.

I just need to restate my love for Metro: Last Light Redux. Massive upgrade from Metro 2033 and that was one of my favorite FPS games of all time (even if it had serious flaws, yes).

Bloody hell they've gone to great lengths to provide a seriously atmospheric experience. From skulking around on the surface, avoiding packs of horrors through taking out a Red station rambostyle, then creeping around terrified of spider creatures that are damn near impossible to kill if you can't get them on their backs or repel them with your light, all the while enveloped in a thick green fog of fuck knows what limiting your view and breaking out the lighter to burn off some cobwebs and OGOD THEY CAN RUN ON THE CEILING FUCK FUCK FUCK I CAN'T RELOAD WITHOUT BOTH HANDS FUCK THAT COBWEB IS SLOWING ME DOOOOOHGOD THERE'S THREE OF THEM where'd the other two go I can't see with all this mess on my gasmask HAHA RELOADED HAVE SOME OF THAT oh they hid in the holes again I hate this game so much please just let me get to the generator without needing a new pair of pants please... oh, good. The filter is running out and I don't have a spare.

The game has flaws, there's no denying that, but god I love it. I don't even mind the linear nature of the game, as I still have a lot to explore and keep finding myself back where I started as I've gotten turned around and gone back through an alternate route. No hand-holding or waypoints, just a minor note scribbled on your notepad and everything else is up to you.

Or just wait for Civ: Beyond Earth. It looks bloody gorgeous at this stage.

It is... different.

Even more than how Civ 3 is different from Civ 5, at the very least.

Tbh i'm not sold yet on Beyond Earth. Compared to a giant like SMAC, they will have a hard time to even match it, but I think that's not their goal to begin with. They just went for something different and much more accessible.

But there is a lot of things I either don't really like or just can't think anything about in Beyond Earth. It's too... gimmicky/casual. One of the flaws of Firaxis in all their recent titles imo.

SMAC is so old they do not even have to think about it. It is not a giant, it is a fossil.

Edit: In addition, despite its critical success SMAC was sold the least out of all of the Civilization games. So in the sense of a legacy, also not a problem. If they named the new game after it, then perhaps a comparison would be in order. But as it is, they do not have to be worried.

Yeah, the nostalgia goggles, dey do nahthing. It was an amazing game for its time, but tried it recently and it's frankly not all that good anymore. The UI is so dated and fiddly it's not even funny. I'll take this spiritual successor any day of the week, from what I've seen.

One of the nice things about the new one is that the devs are not lying to everyone and claiming it is something it is not. They have said in all the interviews that yes, the mechanics and themes are very similar to the other recent Civ games - hell, it has 'Civilization:' in the title. The setting switch allows for different tech mechanics and different starting mechanics, etc. They are not trying to claim anything revolutionary here. If you enjoy Civ and want more meaningful options when you start the game, a different fun setting, and a non-linear tech system - then it will interest you.

Exactly. I think this'll scratch all my "just one more turn" itches, while retaining far more re-playability than the other Civ games. And of course, OMFG SPAES!

It's a giant fossil  :P

SMAC actually had a great reception but rather poor sales overall, which is a shame, but understandable as it targets a niche audience and is a lot more complex than civ.

And that's precisely why they didn't use the same name. They want something different. Less daring I would say...

I think that SMAC UI is great, although a bit old looking indeed. The level of customization of that game is just mindboggling. Either of the interface itself (you will rarely see something such customizable these days), or just the game modes themselves (<3 that slow tech mechanism, it's ten times better than their marathon thingy these days).

But it suffers from obscure things, like a good and clear explanation of combat and numbers shown, the tech tree, while great, suffers from a very poor representation... That's the main gripe I may have with SMAC : some things are too obscure or not clear enough, or difficult to access to have a clear picture of things.

I'll take SMAC over Beyond Earth for now. I like some of their ideas in BE, but some others, I just don't.

That's also why I tend to prefer civ 3 over civ 4 or 5, even if it lacks some of their new concepts like religion, hexa shaped grid, etc. They suppressed so many things that were essential to what I consider to be the core of a civ game that it makes me cringe a bit even if I now play civ 5...

Well, no they didn't use the same name because Beyond Earth is quite literally the next title in the Civilization series. They have never claimed it was anything else. In fact, quite the opposite - the devs have made it very clear in interviews that it is a Civ game and for people to not expect the majority of mechanics to be drastically different than Civ 5 because it is just the next title in the series that happens to have a setting overhaul and a couple related differences.

Well yes, that's what I said. They want a game in the civilization series. Not a successor to SMAC. They want something different from SMAC, which is, a civilization game in space.

For NWN2, you can join via direct connect. I have been a DM on several of the servers, their populations range between 40-70 online at anytime. :)

As for Roll20 yes I love it, recently I collected a few people from my NWN community and started up a Dark-Age Traveler series, its been a blast so far. ofc anyone wanting to get in on some space apocalypse PnP RP is welcome to poke me.

Having never played a single Pokemon title before in my entire life, when I set off on a weeklong business trip to Rochester, NY, I downloaded a GBA emu for my phone along with a ROM of Pokemon Ruby Version.

Biggest mistake of my life.  I think I'm trapped in Hoenn, now.  And I don't even have a fucking Pikachu.  All I have is this stupid Treecko.

Oh, wait!  It just evolved into a Grovyle!  W00t!  \o/

If you like Ruby version, you will love Emerald version.. It's Pretty much ruby but with more Pokemon and an after game that can last forever. I love Emerald, I found my first shiny in Emerald, shiny Natu (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-rs/177.shtml), which I found in the Safari Zone after I beat the game. OFDP may very well be the best game per buck I've ever spent and it's played with two bloody buttons. It's fucking amazing. Unbelievably good execution of a very simple concept. Wolfenstein NWO was my 2014 GOTY. No multiplayer, no fancy leaderboards and so on, just an incredibly tight FPS experience crafted with love and attention to details and a story it has no bloody right to have! It's Wolfenstein! How the hell do they put in a good story and great characters in bloody Wolfenstein?!

Still trying to get some Grey Goo under my belt when I have the time, but it's not quite my RTS. I can't casual it up and just turtle, building tons of stationary defenses and so on. The enemies are too relentless and you have to constantly keep up your side of things. It's very very good though, and the QWERT hotkey system is a fantastic addition to the RTS system. It's like they played a lot of mobas and then realized "This would work REALLY WELL for an RTS!".

Been playing various persistent world servers on Neverwinter Nights 2.

That's cool! I'm playing on an old fashioned NWN2 PW since em...years? :D Keep the spirit!

Besides, some shooter now and then. But nothing else on regular basis.

One Finger Death Punch, Borderlands 2, Grey Goo, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wasteland 2, still Dragon Age: Inquisition, Divinity: Original Sin, Alien Isolation...

I had a bit of a game buying splurge after christmas and have proceeded to play a lot of them but not get that far in any of them xD

OFDP may very well be the best game per buck I've ever spent and it's played with two bloody buttons. It's fucking amazing. Unbelievably good execution of a very simple concept.

Agreed. I've actually played it more than any of the others (except Dragon Age), because it's just so easy to pick up and run a few levels when I'm bored. Plus, it's immensely satisfying getting the 0 misses reward ^^

Been trying to play Alien: Isolation. I usually can't play it for too long per sitting though before getting too scared to continue. :D

I actually played a WoD session with someone that does have quite a bit of spare time. In fact, we and one or two of my time-killing-challenged friends might actually start playing a regular chronicle again.

I'll likely be storyteller. 2/3s of the players have little to no knowledge about the WoD setting, and I plan to make use of that...we'll start with Ghouls:Fatal Addiction.

Muhaha.
Muhaha.
Muhahahahahahhahahaa!

I wish I lived where you live.  All the people I used to play WoD stories with in my teens have scattered across the tri-state area, now.  I would make time for this, if there were enough people around for it to be fun.

I suppose that's a commentary on Eve, since I'm not particularly bothered about not having time to be a space man lately.

Let's see... Guild Wars 2, and occasionally Skyrim. I may play ESO again once they drop the subscriptions in March (they're making it buy to play).

Quoted for sympathy.
My old troupe broke apart more due to time than space issues, but I feel your pain. I doubt I would have gotten into EVE as much as I have if it didn't provide me with a grimdark RP fix for the void that not playing WoD left behind.

Just played through the first episode of "Life is Strange". I really really really liked this game. I don't want to have to wait six weeks for the next episode. :(

There's also a char like Sami in it. <.<

Dwarf-Fortress (Masterwork mod pack of course... why play lesser version)... Skyrim, UFO, Space Engineers...

Really cant wait for the remastered Homeworld set... though I wish they would remake Homeworld: Cataclysm as well...  really miss that game.

Read books, write program code... pass out from boredom.

So after repeatedly getting my ass handed to me, I mean like perennially coming in last place, I decided to wuss out and return to Endless Space on Newbie difficulty. I decided to read some guides, and it seems the conventional wisdom is that I am simply playing the game wrong, since I was trying to treat it is a sort of organic simulation of my desired galactic civilization.

So I started a new game and will attempt to play it as it was intended with a custom, Sowers-based race. If I can handle Newbie, I will try the next notch up.

The game can prove difficult starting at normal if you are not used to, since the AI starts to cheat like hell at that level. Below though, it is you cheating relatively speaking... The AI is generally doing well at developing itself, but terribad at strategy and tactics.

Currently being in my 4X spree and playing Dominions 4 and Distant Worlds, two obscure gems.

Also just picked up the first episode of the Telltale Games Game of Thrones series.

OMG. They captured the feel perfectly. The limited time on conversation choices synchronizes perfectly with GoT's dangerous political world--the dialogue is more deadly than any battle. :D

I highly recommend. Second episode comes out soon (as in February 3rd).

I'm really really liking these graphic adventure games, and looking forward to seeing the genre develop more now that it's becoming a thing again. :)

Crusader Kings 2 - if you haven't tried it give it a go, I adore the game beyond all belief - and the mods for it are amazing too, particularly the GoT one. :D

Dead Space 3 Pure Survivalist Run. Partly because I want to walk around in ships and outposts that looked like something a Matari would build and mostly because...why not?
