Title: Sports in New Eden?
Post by: Anskek on 28 Jan 2015, 14:25
I thought there was mention of some grav ball game in Eve in some old chronicle but aside from that, are sports really mentioned anywhere? Be them with balls or surf boards etc?

Surfboards are mentioned in Templar one in chapter 2. People were about to go surfing at Xerah beach.

Caldari are big on combat sports.  Gambling and games of chance also.

Splinters is arena-style piloted mech combat IIRC.

Much gamble. Such immolation.

They are definitely the most sport-crazy of the big 4.

Was the ball game this one, perhaps: Sfear League Kenduzana (SLK) (http://backstage.eve-inspiracy.com/index.php?topic=1051.msg12084#msg12084)?

While not a CCP made one, Ken did do some quality stuff. See also the original Intaki game it was based on: Kendu Kanarma (http://backstage.eve-inspiracy.com/index.php?topic=732.msg8089#msg8089).

gravball is a thing, I think.

Might even be mentioned in one of the novels.

Who wants to fight a capsuleer in Mindclash other than another capsuleer?

Splinters always intrigued me. I always sorta envisioned it as a mini MechWarrior type thing in a big coliseum or something.

Also the Alliance Tournament and New Eden Open are more capsuleer oriented but I would imagine they have a pretty large baseliner viewer base as well.

I remember the Alliance Tournament initially being sponsored by the Caldari Gaming Commission.

A lot of the sports in Eve have struck me as probably being more technology oriented such as with Mindclash or Splinterz. This might have to do with that with all the potential human biomedical augmentation, cybernetics and pharmaceuticals available it's probably hard to ensure a truly even playing field -- steroids and other performance enhancing drugs are already an issue in today's sports, who knows how difficult it might be to prevent similar abuse given Eve technology. This might account for the popularity of Mindclash and Splinterz, they offer or at least offer the perception that the competitors are all on an even playing field.

Beyond that there might be a lot of digital sports that are popular and have a wide fanbase. I'm sure there's New Eden equivalents of competitive LoL/Dota/SC2/FPS games that would draw people in.

A quick search turned up these bits:

From the chronicle Sand Giants (https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Sand_Giants_%28Chronicle%29):
Quote
The Minmatar had a tradition of physical expression ranging all the way from the delicate, symbolic flights of trained dancers to the coarse, even violent, dances of tribal warriors. This one, plying his trade on a frictionless mat, was doing the exhibition form of Ruhste, an old and extremely physical dance art that more often than not had the exhibitor spinning in the air. It had been banned during the Amarr occupation due to fears that it might be used as a tool to train fighters, but was now permitted as a cultural sport, although the government had adamantly refused to give it any grants or official backing.
And there's Fedo Fighting (https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Fedo_fighting)...
Skyball (https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Skyball)...
Spaceship racing (https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Spaceship_racing)...and I know at least the SRV league has been mentioned in the world news (and possibly the ISRC (?) as well), so I consider that canon  :P...
And Sun Surfing (https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Sun-surfing).

Other games can be found here (https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Entertainment#Games_and_Activities) as well.
