New Missile effects update
« on: 24 Apr 2012, 11:35 »

Go look here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNc8VAmtO5E&feature=youtu.be

Its near the end.

And now I need to get a Rattlesnake.

And maybe take up stealth bombing.

And put missiles on as many things as I can.

THOU SHALT NOT MOCK CCP GUARD.

There's really no need to - Guard mocks himself quite well. :p

That dude is tiny.

Srsly.  Though, I think he was trying to poke fun of himself by having a giant walk past during the shoot.

Also, its kinda cool working in a job where you get to answer to "Mankiller"

Is the missile effect rev going to be in Inferno or sometime after inferno?

Inferno, in theory. I plan to hop on Duality tonight if it's up and take a look-see at things. :3

My recollection is that CCP Guard's shorter than I am, which is saying something.

And the missile effects... Allow me one vent, please. Yes, they're pretty, but I'd really prefer to have fewer things that are space-implausible, not more, to have to explain away to friends who came in intrigued by spaceships and then saw... submarines with explosion-in-atmosphere effects. And space jelly.

Sounds like I'm definitely in the minority, though, and submarines with explosions will sell EVE. :/

To be fair, some of the explosions do not seem to be oxygen-based, since they are blue-white rather than red-orange. Those must be the EM missles? I don't know how missle propultion would work in space though... is it possible to have smoke and flames like we have with atmosphere-based missles?

You can burn some fuel that doesn't require oxygen, but outputs a gaseous chemical trail.

Or take oxygen with you to burn as is done now.  As for the trails, any reaction based system will output something, the only question is how visible it is.

Though technically any exhaust from a rocket would be moving away from the rocket, but with no atmosphere it wouldn't billow out like a rocket trail in atmosphere would.  It would just keep moving, and honestly I can't think my way through to what that would look like.  I guess just a constantly expanding line until any particles in space disturbed it.

It would have been really cool if they based the missile propulsion on who made it, so Minmatar (explosive I think) would have smoke coming out while whatever type the Gallente make would just have this cool glow.

Matariki, vent allowed of course, but now I'm curious as to who your friends (and you as well) are that they want actual reaction based travel on spaceships, rather than the sub-like travel that is most popular in sci-fi.  I used to think I was the only one who geeked out when Babylon 5's starfuries actually got it right.
