Title: Your ship names.
Post by: Marcus Gord on 17 Sep 2010, 14:29
I haven't seen a thread like this here, and I find it interesting how people name their ships, so I'd like to ask people to post the names of some of their ships here, their naming conventions, and why certain ships have the names that they do.

For me, I liked to use Japanese for a lot of my ships, but I'm moving away from that to using 'Spirit of ....'

So my ships go like this:

Crane - Deadman's Hand From an old simulator game called X-Wing: Alliance.

Tengu - Moui no Tsurugi Meaning Sword of Fury if I got the translation correct.

Orca - Spirit of Wind

Cormorant - Takara-Maru Takara means Treasure in Japanese, if I got the translation, and Maru is a common ship prefix in Japan. It's a utility dessy for my alt to fly while I do exploration. It does the hacking and stuff.

Hawk - Masamune According to Wikipedia, a man called Masamune is legendary in Japan for being the greatest swordsmith in history. I can't actually fly this yet, but I own one, and that's what I'll call her  :P

Your turn  ;)

EDIT: In case you're wondering, that's pretty much the extent of my assembled ships right now

My mission-running Domi is called the "Liberty Hammer" and my mining laser equipped Thorax is the "Loretta Lynn."

Other than that, I rename most of my ships "Saxon Hawke's Atron" to mess with the guys who sit around Intaki trying to scan everything down.

Amarr ships: religious stuff, or weapons from Shattered Galaxy

Battleships: Chorus of Angels, Excessive Negation, Aria of Divinity, Serpent of Eden
Cruisers: Theocratic Dominion, Terminal Velocity, Zaragram's Heresy (Sac)
Interceptors: Clarity of Purpose, Black December

Caldari ships: mostly names stolen from Wing Commander 3/4

Battleships: Hvarkann, Sivar, Vesuvius
Cruisers: Strakha (Falcon ofc,) Jalthi
Bombers: Paktahn

I also make it a habit to rename every shuttle I fly to "Executive Shuttle" just because.

I tend to name my ships random Japanese words, sometimes relating to the ship - for instance my Cynabal is called Aburamushi, which can mean 'cockroach' because I think it kind of looks like a giant bug.  :D

However, thanks to the super-awesome Napanii Primer, new ships will end up getting Caldari names, or at the least Napanii(ized) bastardizations of Japanese words if I don't find something I like.  :bear:

I also make it a habit to rename every shuttle I fly to "Executive Shuttle" just because.
I will only fly Gallente shuttles and I rename them all 'The Frisbee' ever since a friend of mine made me notice the similarity between a Gal shuttle and some kind of wild Nerf frisbee.  :P

I make extensive use of names and every ship-class has a name unique to that particular design - no two Moa's for instance, ever have separate names, however Moa's and Caracals will have different ones.

As it was bothersome to have to make new ones all the time I lost ships and to avoid old ones being re-cycles over and over on random ships, I made a long list.

Every race of ships have a separate list of names from Anime I've seen and Manga I've read or Web-comics I've read and a couple games I've played - and each ship has one name assigned to that ship.

A few examples...

As people might notice, all names must be female. I'm not entierly sure why but I keep thinking of my ships as female.

Because I'm able to fly nearly any ship made in this game, I keep considering to add male names, but luckily thus far I keep finding more sources to add from...

I tried to think of ONE theme to give my ships, but I could never find something that fit every ship, while still being inclusive to the theme itself... snakes, canines, military terms, etc.

So I went with what I thought fit Senn best, a combination of harsh-sounding names pulled from all the themes I thought he'd approve of considering his rough, soldier-y past. Its a short list, but I'm proud of 'em all. Ship type, followed by its name:

Rifter - The Bastard
Thrasher - Blackjack
Caracal - Mean Bitch
Hound - Havoc
Cheetah - Geist

I make up my ship names that sound interesting, things that Nikita would name a ship.
I use the ACCV prefix in front of all of them, which stands for Angel Cartel Capsuleer Vessel

for ship names I have things like:
Nightmare Child
Cat's Claw
Clear Air Turbulence
Gravedancer
Spirit Darter
Iron Sunrise
Red Storm
Crucifix Glitch
Bad Air
Lighting Ghost
Radical Shift
Fate be Damned
Gunboat Diplomat
Revenge Sex
Shadow Aspect

My ships (Matari for the most part) often have names with bad weather incorporated into them. Stormbringer, Perfect Storm, Firestorm (after an RP event involving a lot of fire) and so on and so forth. I also have the (admittedly bad) habit of adding some kind of corp tag to it. While in DONIG I often used -DoN- before the shipname, and while in Du'uma Fiisi it was often -DFS-.

Gives me a tactical disadvantage, D-Scan wise, but it's part of the RP and I'll take that handicap.

It varies... I have Badgers named Trashaul for instance.

I tend to name replacement ships after the system where their predecessor was destroyed.

I personally prefer poetic (alliteration ftw!) names for most of my ships. Internally I use an alpha-numeric serial code for cataloging purposes (which I'm not revealing).

For example:
Spirit of Apocrypha
Into that Ashen Wake
Elegance in Silence
Valiant Defender
Whisper in the Storm
Heaven can wait
Grey Skies
The Long Road Home

Satan's Panties, Tuonetar's embrace, Tuonetar's embrace, Gehenna's Wake,  Amitiel's Grace, Isjungfrun, Ulciscor Tangia, Tuonetar's Kiss

Back when I was in Naqam I named all my ships Utopian [something]:

Utopian Ideal (Chimera)
Utopian Peace (Nightmare)
Utopian Splinter (Crow)
Utopian Link (Absolution)
Utopian Sunshine (Zealot)
Utopian Rain II (Cerberus)
Utopian Curse (Hurricane)
Utopian Pattern (Armageddon)
Utopian Temple (Megathron)
Utopian Alchemist (Phantasm)
etc.

When I joined ReAw I started using more random names, though there are themes here and there:

Awakening Ideal (Thanatos)
Burnished Fool (Loki)
Brilliant Fool (Tengu)
Sarcastic Vole (Catalyst)
Sweetest Feather (Cynabal)
Lustrevik Lass (Raven)
Windup Cloud (Hurricane)
Fundamental Error (Vagabond)
Assembly Required (Scimitar)
Simple Twin (Hurricane)
Sunset Sky (Abaddon)
Broken Sky (Manticore)
Pacifist Dream (Armageddon)
Low Sky (Hound)
Cold Memory (Megathron)
Heaven's Memory (Hurricane)
etc.

Recently got a Legion, thinking I'll call it Shining Fool.

I use variants of the existing Sansha names [IMMENSE UNORIGINALITY]

True Sansha Xenosaga [Nightmare]
True Sansha T-elos [Phantasm]
Centus Horror [Dominix]
True Slave Domniox [Navy Issue Caracal]
Republic Slave Beast [Firetail]
True Slave Invader [Bustard]
Foundations' Yowler [Crane]
Sansha's Loyal Watch [Scorpion]
Dread Centum Ravager [Gila]
Centii Observer [Anathema]
Dark Sansha Monster [Deimos]
Dark Slave Harvester [Ashimmu]
The Sword of Nation [Widow] <- ♥u master ; - ;
True Slave Echo [All my shuttles]
True Sansha Vanguard [Tengu]
True Slave Wailer [Osprey]
Centatis Kommandant [Claymore]
Stygian Slave Lich [Flycatcher]

I normally use the Dark prefix when using Blood Raider technology, and Dread when using Guristas technology. True Sansha usually has Sansha faction gear on it, or is otherwise a particularly exceptional ship.

I've noticed something about these threads. Everyone posts their list of ship names, hoping someone else will notice how cool their ship names are. Invariably nobody does.

Admit it, you all posted your ship names in this thread, because you were secretly slightly hoping someone would go "OMFEGFEG THAT'S THE BEST SHIP NAEM EVUR" etc. But when nobody did, you felt a bit terrible. Like me.

All Cia's ships have names that start with 'Fortune's ... something'

Fortune's Fist - Dominix
Fortune's Fire - Thorax, although the name has been held by a Vexor in the past
Fortune's Figment - Helios
Fortune's Firefly - Proteus
Fortune's Flea - Shuttle

I do, however, rename on the fly on the rare occasion I'm in a PvP fleet.

Naw, I'm not hoping. But I find it interesting how many people have developed naming schemes.

Anyway, I typically assign my ships words with negative connotations, and typically one word to a ship type (for example, all of my Thorax's might be named "Wrath"). To be honest, I wouldn't bother with naming them at all except for the scanner.

That said, some of the names I've used:

Banshee
Daemon
Incubus
Aberration
Dread Visage
Ripper
Blight
Lilith
Doom Hammer
Searing Light
Regretful Damnation
Catastrophe
Tragedy
Annihilator
Oblivion's Embrace
Angelic Blade
Hatred
Wrath

My old ship names (not a full list, only those I can remember):

Maranatha - My Anathema
Sansha's Servant - My Succubus
Nikiruu - My Drake, Dominix and Tengu
Aria - My Zephyr
Nomad Church - My Primae

Everything else I named according to the hour and minute that I undocked in it.

For instance, 0126, 2304, etc.

Aaaah, and this is why you are such a #%&#¤%&%¤. Let people keep their little candle-hopes for a change, why don't you? Incidentally, if I wanted to have recognition to such a degree I'd post the lists for the State ships, Faction ships, T3 ships and Capital ships as well.

Also, I found some of these naming scemes fun and some out right cute - Graelyn's apoc being named 'the first stone' is something I found hillarious due to the bible connection, either being a ego-stroker that Graelyn is sin-less, or just a pull of his own char's leg.

Where is your list btw?

All of my ships' names are simple Latin words or phrases that may or may not have some tangential connection to their purpose. When I eventually crosstrain Caldari or something, I might start up a second naming scheme for their hulls to keep them distinct from the Amarr ones I currently fly... not sure yet; something about the Amarr hulls just fits Latin, in my eyes. Anyway, names:

Harbinger I - Quid Pro Quo (seemed fitting for agent work -- 'Something for Something')
Harbinger II - Libera Oni (I got this one for free -- hence 'Free of Charge')
Harbinger III - Mane Niveus (this particular named seems apt given the direction Kyber's RP has gone in the past few months -- 'Snowy Morning')

Apocalypse I - Magis Pro Magi (figured that if the Quid Pro Quo was to be used for L3 mission running, it'd be appropriate to use a similar name for its replacement ship in L4s -- 'Something More for Something More')
Apocalypse II - Vivere Conare (following the hangover-induced destruction of the first Apocalypse, this seemed fitting -- 'Try to Stay Alive')
Apocalypse III - Contra Lethargatis (seeing how well the previous Apocalypse lived up to its name, I found myself in need of yet another and, similarly to my third Harbinger, recent-ish RP suggested this to me -- 'Against the Indifferent')

Anathema - Pretereo Dissimulatus (while I can't actually fly a CovOps yet, this works with the ship's function perfectly once I can -- 'I Pass by Unnoticed')
Crusader - Dederem Consulationem (kinda ties in with both recent RP and the fact that I had a tough time deciding which out of Interceptors and CovOpss to train first -- 'I've Given it Full Consideration')

And then we have the shuttles. Oh, God; shuttles everywhere (and that's not even taking into account that stack of 99 Amarr Shuttles I found while doing the Minmatar epic arc that I have no recollection of purchasing). My shuttles all follow a simple naming scheme: Nuntius (Latin for 'messenger') followed by Roman numerals to indicate what number shuttle that is. I've gone through Nuntius I to Nuntius LIV, now, with the odd gap in the collection for ones that I've palmed off on other people, or more accurately another person. Fifty-four shuttles scattered across highsec, then a stack of 99 mystery Amarr Shuttles in Aldrat. That can't be healthy, can it?

I use this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ship_names_of_the_culture) mainly. Some are 1 character too long, which is annoying.

All of my shuttles are called FITTINGS POLICE though.

Damn, I post, go to bed, go to work, come back to three pages.... (Working Saturdays sucks ass)

I do find it really interesting how people name their ships. I use separate names for ships of the same class, unless it's a replacement, like a Rokh I once lost called Hachiman I named the replacement Hachiman II

People who use languages other than English aren't something I see often on my travels either. I'm moving away from it because of never really knowing if I get the translation correct, which constantly bugs me. Nothing worse than thinking the name is something cool, when it could really be something nonsensical

Until all the childish ones come about naming their ships all kinds of vulgar crap. The character names that are vulgar or offensive get deleted for a reason.

I'd LOVE for this to be standard too, but frankly the reality of the player-base denies it.

Same way I'd love having two small sections of every single ship model be reserved for Corp emblems, but that would demand a bit more of a strain in the servers, also denying it's use.

My ship naming convention is based on certain themes. Each time I buy a batch of new ships, I give each batch a particular theme. When i first moved to Ghost Festival I named my ships after the GSV's from the Culture novels by Iain M Banks, e.g. 'Jaundiced Outlook', 'Irregular Apocalypse', 'Shoot Them Later' and 'Kiss the Blade' for a few examples. My latest batch were named after the Hovercraft from the Matrix 'Logos', 'Nebuchadnezzar', 'Mjolnir' and 'Osiris'. Single ships I usuall give hard sounding martial names like 'Warpsite' or 'The Hammer of Dawn'.

Mines pretty simple I use this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_legendary_creatures_from_Japan) for all the names. Its a corp rule that all of them have ✖<---this in front of the name for D-Scan purposes on roams.

Some of the ones I have assembled currently:

Harpy - Bakeneko
Hawk - Chochinobake
Buzzard - Chokozetsu
Blackbird - Aoandon
Crow - Ameonna
Manticore - Kubikajiri
Vengeance - Bakezori
Crusader - Aketeko
Malediction - Inugami
Purifier - Kyokotsu
Enyo - Amanozako, Ashimagari
Ishkur - Ikiryo
Taranis - Jatai
Nemesis - Enenra

Shuttles and other ships I dont really use much like my hauler are all called Onryo.

For small frigates I tend to use ship registration codes, ie TES CS-3 is a Crusader (my third one) and TES MD-2 is a Malediction.

Punisher hulls are named after plants, mainly flowers, ie TES Chrysanthemum, TES Rhododendron
Inquisitor hulls are named after insects, ie TES Sandfly, TES Locust

Coercer hulls start with a B, ie TES Bulwark, TES Bounty

Auguror hulls start with a C, ie TES Castle, TES Charity
Arbitrator hulls start with an S, ie TES Spectre, TES Swiftsure
Omen hulls start with a D, ie TES Daring, TES Dauntless
Maller hulls start with an A ie TES Agile, TES Ardent

Prophecy hulls start with an I, ie TES Indefatigable, TES Inflexible
Harbinger hulls start with an E, ie TES Excellent, TES Errant

Armageddon hulls have gold-based names, ie TES Heart of Gold, TES Golden Glory
Apocalypse hulls start with a T or are named after past Emperors or Heirs, ie TES Temeraire, TES Temal Kador
Abaddon hulls start with an O, ie TES Obdurate, TES Onslaught

My Archon is called TES Ark Imperial.

Many of these names are also the names of past or present Royal Navy ships (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Royal_Navy_ship_names (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Royal_Navy_ship_names)).

TES stands for The Empress' Ship

Heh.  Good novel; the mockumentary about reinventing the vampire was bliss.

I don't think I have an actual naming scheme.  About half my ships are named in Sanskrit gibberish based primarily on what I think sounds cool.  The rest are named whatever I feel like:  a salvage Cat named 'Eight-Legged Freak', a Myrm named 'Humble Student' because I got the first one blown up in a mission, a Viator named 'Mass Transit' because puns amuse me, etc.  I'm naming all my battleships after Gallente rp corps that didn't make it.  I fear (and expect) the day I name a ship 'Grass Spider'.

Mines pretty simple I use this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_legendary_creatures_from_Japan) for all the names.

I used to do this when I was still using Japanese names....Well, that, and an online translator that I'm not sure gave me what I was always looking for...

Mine all start with "Trinity's ...."

It is a reference to the Mashtori, which I won't spoil for people who want to do a bit of digging or are bored  ;)

eg.

Trinity's Blade - Crusader
Trinity's Sword - Ex-Armageddon
Trinity's Shield - Drake
Trinity's Aura - Absolution
Trinity's Burden - Bestower
Trinity's Armour - Guadian
Trinity's Pride - Archon (<3)

I haven't renamed my Paladin as it uses a custom name from before the Mashtori

Fyren Imperialis - Its Latin, but considering the development of Amaarad I might have to change it to that soon™

There are many systematic naming schemes here. My ship names are more whimsical:

That character also flew and lost a series of Stabbers called "Bodkin".

Curse: Midnight Embrace
For me, it invokes thoughts of darkness closing over - kinda like how neutralizers suck all the energy out of a ship, silencing it.

Harbinger: Nova Flow
Actually an assault rifle from Anarchy Online... I picked the name because it sounds cool.

Sacrilege: Dark Angel
This one was a gift from my friends in PRETA, so it felt fitting to give it an angel-themed name.

Zealot: Seraphim's Tears
Again, because it sounds cool.

Anathema: Onyx Lens
Onyx because it's Khanid. Lens because it observes people.

Absolution: Sister of Mercy
This one is meant to be ironic, since it does a ridiculous amount of DPS...

Armageddon: Dead Reckoning
I had to think this name up real quick - like, on the way to a POS bash op. Dead Reckoning has a delightfully final feeling to it.

Damnation: Dominatrix
Because it's shiny and black and makes ships more effective just by being there. :3

Paladin: Ace of Skulls
I'll give ten million isk to the first person who can tell me where this is from and what it's significance is!

Seems everyone in Du'uma took a similar approach.  I researched animals.  My PvP ships were all named after a breed of horse that fit their use - fast ships after fast racing horse breeds, larger hulls after working horses etc.

PvE ships are named after play equipment, mining barges (albiet Zu don't fly them anymore) sea animals.

All ship names are assembled as follows:
-CORPTAG- Name of ship then VE or VP (PvE or PvP)

Classic example: -DFS- Junglegym VE my Domi for missions or -DFS- Ban'ei VP I believe is my Comet. Ban'ei is a breed of racing horse.

On my alt the ships have much more random names:
Liquid Sky - her prowler
Liquid Shadow - her cheetah
Breadmaker - her hulk

Her ships unlike Zu are named based off of, "What ever the hell I feel like calling them."

Also as far as the "handicap" goes Miz - if I was an enemy, ran a D-scan and saw a half dozen "DFS" on the screen I'd go... "Shit."  It is both a handicap and an advantage.

If you ran a scan to see them and freaked only when they show up on scanner you have not paid attention in local...

While it would allow a smart enemy to know what you have to an extent, if they do a scan they can also get rather accurate intel this way - after all, any ship that DON'T have a corp-tag would be a possible foe, thus making intel much more accurate.

While it is true that it removes the guess-work for the enemy too, the benefit to your own side is also significant, though as you mention, it is a two-sided sword. Just not one of to big a consequence.

More often than not my ships begin with TES prefix and depending on setup named after various pieces of Roman army equipment, corps or people that are inspirational to me.

"TES Merdaneth" for example covers most of my Crusader fits because he came up with the setup :)

the latest batch include:

a railgun Rokh called the "Spooky Action" (spooky action at a distance - look it up)
a beam Apoc called the "Outreach Program"
a Scorpion called the "Interference Pattern"
a Tengu called the "Xenoscape" (tried to auction it for charity - zero bids.)
a Drake called the "Poor Dumb Infantry"
a Manticore called "Entropy"
My faithful old Falcon, the "Penumbra"
a Basilisk called the "Support Package"
and a Buzzard called the "Wraith".

I've also finally begun my entry into the world of capital ships and hope to own both a Phoenix and a Chimera in short order, which (provisionally) I will be calling the "Dark Matter" and the "Dark Energy" respectively.

I usually tend to not care about ship names except:

My Machariels are all named "Fuck you ****" where **** is who killed my last machariel.
All my capital ships are named after stuff from the Holocaust to try & capture the might of them (for instance my Wyvern is "The Final Solution")

We mark our ships with SotR (sword of the righteous).

Either I name them after systems in the war zone (since I'm Amarr Militia), like Heart of Huola, Roushzar Rebel, etc.  Or, I name them after my favorite FCs.

Shalee's got a crush....  j/k

Mine always have RDS for Rho Dynamics Ship, and then the name.  For the name itself, I usually thy to put some meaning into it, but other than that its usually random.  I usually try to have three ships named Cortana, Joyeuse, and Durendal, after the swords of Ogeir, Charlemagne, and Roland, but I don't always have ships that live up to the name.  When I was in Minmatar FW, the frigates I flew were all named something similar to Brute or Savage, until I got tired of finding Synonyms and started naming them Savage II, etc.  For the rest, I usually just try and find something that the ship seems to like.

Though if I ever get a carrier, or something similar, Sai will name it either Witch or Princess of Pator for Evanda.

When I first started the game I used Norse mythological names for my ships. I later discovered that that's the basis for the classes of Minmatar ships.

I play Amarr.

Maybe I should just rename them all Caldari Shuttle or something...

I tend to stick a new name to every ship and it's always about how much women hate Zag as the theme:

Rene's Redemption
Marianne's Malevolence
Valerie's Vendetta
Vivien's Vengeance
Rochelle's Revenge

Basically, vessels much like women hate Zag and enjoy nothing more than to get him in trouble. Mostly by causing him to lose everything violently and have nothing left but the capsule on his back.

Also, an allusion to the days when Zag was a philanderer and chaser of skirts.

Rene is a gender-less name, last i looked. Though honestly not that popular around my parts of the world, and practically never used on boys. Rene is the name for a couple girls I know of. In France, it's a male name.

Oh, I tell you, a young man gets drunk in a Syndicate dive bar and it plays out like the Crying Game with an androgynous and caramel skinned Intaki.

However,

a) I was drunk.
b) It was meant to be Renee
c) Let this be a lesson that being drunk and missing a single damn letter will lead to all sorts of hilarity.

Postin' because BECAUSE. Bite me.

Nikruu's Nomad Church thing came from me, and is the basis for one of the ship prefixes I might get the corpies to use. We'd avoid using just one, though, to confuse enemies. The other prefixes from our better days related to squadrons.

Cool names in this thread I'm reposting here to salute and possibly steal or something, I don't know:

Stormcrow - Nice one, Hamish. Yoink.
Iron Sunrise - Somebody read a book! I think I will vary this and use eet.
Heaven Can Wait - I think I'm going to name my heaviest DPS boat some variant of this that relates to the Amarr stories about knocking on Heaven's door.
Windup Cloud - Silver, this is win. Still got the ship? Feel like selling? :P
Another one from Silver, the 'Lustrevik Lass,' is makin' me want to turn this into a naming convention - Lady of Luminaire or something. Mebbe Lonetrek Lass, I have no idea.

Abaddons in my fleet have almost always gotten a sort of 'Brown Bess' treatment, except with 'Abigail,' 'Abbey,' or 'Abby.' 'Angry Abby' for the meaner fittings, other variants relevant to the Abaddon's limited roles.

If I ever find a use for a station-warrior kinda ship, maelstrom or whatever I get, it'll be called Hamadryad. Because it can't leave it's tree.

If for some reason I have a Hyperion, I'll be likely to name it Sunlit Curl, because lolpoetry and myths. Might not though, because it looks enough like a terribly misshapen cock as it is.

My best faction ship generally gets named Hyperborean, because they're barbarian techno-primitivists, I tell you! Sheesh. Might start using this for Caldari ships, though. They're foreigners and they live up north, amirite? >.>

Flagship of my personal fleet is usually the Amaranth. Heh, grain.

Some ships are named using cocktail/drink names which already have another meaning, for example Gimlet, Bodyslam, Backdraft. I usually have an Amarr Navy Slicer (relegated to shuttle duty, these days : / ) named Vanguard, and my workhorse ships usually feature at least one named Keystone. There's also been a few ships named after other capsuleers Ashar has whimsical feeling toward, but they're invariably zero-crew vessels - something with a Merlin hull gets named Xi Nao's Burning Wit every time I lose the last one, f. ex.

Then there's traditional corporate ship names we keep around because they have meaningful stories -
The Contrition, Ashar's best Amarr battleship below tier 3, tech one or two, been around forever.
The Remenbrance, Geddon class variant, has been handed around the corporation and its former employees (the ones on good terms with us, anyhow). Last one was lost in the fall of CVA's Providence sovereignty by a friend, next one will probably be inside the corporation soon.
The Spirit of Shuria is some kind of hauler, I think a blockade runner.

Other than that, religious concepts and odd jokes.
