A handful of them are has-beens, or at least give that appearance, who seem to have nothing better to do, than to talk down to others.

It's not acceptable. Some people think it is, but they're mistaken. In a medium consisting solely of conversation, tactics that shut down the conversation are depressingly retrograde.

I'm under the impression there are far greater things in life than to get overly concerned as to someone's behaviour online.

Okay, this thread exists for a reason.
I've decided what that reason is, and it's not a good playbook.
One might say it even confirms some things. Don't be doing that.
