Inferred Slurs
« on: 11 May 2010, 06:49 »

Not going to link it, but the latest post of mine that got euthanized and left to decompose in the catacombs apparently 'inferred slurs'. I request clarification. I request... understanding.

What in that post 'inferred' a 'slur', and in that case to who?

I can assure you, I take the raps when I go naughty, quite simply because I know when I am. And so does everyone else. I don't 'infer' anything. I say it straight. There is no confusion when I am providing 'slurs', unless the one reading it is hellbent and determined to crowbar in some kind of ridiculous intent or motivation that did not exist.

So let me hear it. Where's the 'slur', and what is it 'inferring', and to who for that matter?

I'm curious, too. To me it looked like all she said was "Cosmo, you're one of the few of your alliance/corp that won't try to make this a debate."

Which is not a slur on anyone. Some people like to make debates out of everything, which is not a bad thing, but not necessarily productive.

SF 'public personality'  = Jade i guess saying he can't go public without cascating into a raving whatever...

I'm actually with you on this one though, and I have started the same debate regarding derisive and perjorative use of language...

What I gathered from that is, if you want a board that is into heavy moderation and civility, you are gonna have to live with these labels being handed out rather loosely... it is a subjective call by the mods, and they would rather kill one post too many than one too few...

It was borderline, but after some debate it was decided that it would be better to mod it. We will generally err on the side of caution. Posts that we mod do still exist in the catacombs.

I didn't ask if it was modded or not. I am asking what exactly 'inferred slurs' mean, and exactly how it applies to my post. If something that's not even remotely intended to be insulting gets modded, I apparently have a need to get into the minds of the moderators to enough of a degree that I can avoid it in the future.

The rules were of NO use there.

Saying that one member of an organization is the only one that can do something without it turning into a 'raving debate' I think was the central issue. As I mentioned, it was borderline, but we decided to err on the side of caution. There was some discussion had before that decision was reached.

Edit: I would like to add that situations that are a bit borderline are the reason that moderators have discretion. It will sometimes mean that the mods and members don't see eye to eye. That's the price of doing business in the way that this forum was created to do it - the 'line' isn't always clear cut. Judgement calls are required.

THAT was the slur? Urgh... shoehorned slur into an innocent sentence. Which, by the way is nothing but true facts, as you well know. Ah well. Answer gotten. /thread

Inference is an entirely personal thing, surely? You could infer that I'm taking the piss here, but that inference is entirely your own. :P

Still, cf Casiella:

Maybe it wasn't improper.

Maybe the problem stemmed from people misinterpreting the actual post, and (given this site's focus) the mods took action to keep the peace, even though recognizing no slur was "implied".

Just guessing. ;)

Heh, I only used the word 'inferred' since that was what the moderation said.
