Pre-ordered it. Best. Civ. Ever.

There are so many refinements and factors that make Civilization 5 an incredible game, so here it goes:

The art style is beautiful; user interface and overall theme is of a sort of 1930s Futurist look, sort of Atlas Shrugged-esque fonts. I forget the actual name of the period, but it's nice. The UI is clean, not clunky so you can see most of the map, and a lot of micromanaging tasks have been streamlined, such as managing happiness for your entire empire, not each city. Also, pollution is gone.

The graphics are top-notch, filled with details that make looking at your empire a feast on the eyes. Little cows eating grass, birds on the shoreline, flying in circles, living forests. And instead of black fog-of-war, you see clouds that mask view until you explore the area. Very nice touch. Each leader now speaks their own language, and has their own set piece, which is interesting.

The music is gorgeous, mostly orchestral and minimalist pieces that change based on what time period you're in, and when you're engaging in war or not. Yeah, that's about it.

Oh, and combat isn't boring anymore. You can't stack units, so most combat takes place on actual battlefields, and with the nice animations, it's fun to watch your little guys die or succeed.

Tons of features I don't have time to writ eabout, but just get it. Multiplayer with you all will be epic.

After playing for about five hours today, so far my best pick is the Germans. They strike a fine line between culture and military capabilities, and their early special unit destroys any medieval ground unit that isn't a catapult.

Also, Germans are epic.

We should have a backstage civ match in a few months, maybe during Christmas weekend. Whoever wins gets bragging rights.

But yeah, will take some time to master this. Still trying to find a way to get to the industrial age BEFORE the 1900.

For me, the joy in Civilization has always been epic single player empire construction. On any given iteration, I will go for one or two playthrus with a military victory, then one or two of other victory types. The deep joy I find in exploring the gamespace and imagining the world that has evolved just seems like it would turn into quite a different experience in multiplayer. And probably a significantly weaker one, at least for my taste.

They need to fix a few issues with Civ 5; after playing, i realized he AI needs to be heavily improved, so that they're not always aggressive. Also, better diplomacy.

Machines are the best diplomats.

They know what is best.

Your elimination is just a stepping stone on that path.

Wow, I can actually conquer another civ without sucking so hard.

I like the fact you send units to attack at the same time for epic battlez.

I also like the social policies providing a sort of customization in terms of RP to your nation..."Hm, a warrior-driven republic" and so on...

I do miss changing leader portraits from Civ 3 though.

Too bad you can't see what other civs are doing; that's one thing they need to fix, the diplomacy. In Civ 4, it would tell you if A civ was friends or enemies with you, annoyed, etc. Again, patches FTW since it's on Steam only, so I have no complaints.

Wait, what? How do you do that?

That would make my life a lot easier!  :s

Oh, not quite. SEPARATE units i mean, not the same ones...ie. multiple battles at the same time.

I really like the strategy in this one...

"If we can defeat the entire enemy military at this chokepoint in the Paris mountains, we'll be able to overrun their entire nation thereafter"

And, as always, it literally is "writing your own history", more than ever before. And liberating city-states is a neat concept...in the modern era, those city-states would be the equivalent of small, minor nations...it's more immersive than just having 2 giant globe-spanning empires, and the 'puppet' idea, in some RP meta-fashion, keeps a civilization alive (not mechanically) though

I hate that everyone is so damn aggressive. Gandhi always attacks me because I'm too close, what the hell.

I bought this on Friday, and I'm pretty impressed with it so far.

I thought that I was going to miss the religious stuff, but I've now realised that all it did was force you to race down specific tecnology paths in order to try to nab new religions.

I really like the way you use culture to adopt policies, and hexes are 4tw.

Also, the lower need for micro-management of cities is a big plus in the late game.

The music is gorgeous

Apart from the tune from the Hovis adverts.

I always loved the Civ series. Truth is though, I haven't bought, or installed another game since installing Eve for the first time. So I most probably wont get around to playing this either.

I've found that Alpha Centauri was the best experience in this game genre and Alien Crossfire just made it better.

I should play Alpha Centauri, but don't just stick to the past. Expand your horizons.

Trying to figure out what this version is truly bringing to the table over Civ III. Dissapointing, I feel like I'm just playing the same game again.

Barely.

Hm. Well, I'd say it offers incremental improvements rather than major revamps, but so far I like:

- Lack of unit stacking
- Hex grid (can't remember what version saw this introduced)
- Culture system changes
- Embarked land units rather than sea transports
- Ranged attacks by cities
- City-states and puppets
- Social policies over government changes
- Achievements (at least in the Steam version)

I could probably come up with a few more, but those come to mind first.

The only thing I'm looking for is an improved diplomacy system, where you can see exactly what the other civs don't like, as in Civ IV, and less random hostilities after 300 turns of peace, just for building a city near another player.
Title: Re: Civ V
Post by: Casiella on 05 Oct 2010, 12:05
The diplomacy system is improved tremendously, though perhaps not to the extent I'd like. Perhaps tying in espionage, for example, and more discussion ability.

You haven't experienced a friendly civ suddenly becoming hostile then immediately going to war with you, even after you've traded and had defensive pacts for hundreds of turns?

That has not happened to me in Civ V, nope! They complain about specific things, like my getting too cozy with city states they consider within their sphere of influence, before we have problems.

Generally, I just kick their asses anyway.
