How I hate IC flamewars.
« on: 07 Mar 2011, 09:54 »

I've decided to make a thread that touches on how everyone has to flamebait EVERY POSSIBLE DISCUSSION.

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1478614

Why is it that we must respond to every remark in an insidious way? It's not "what your character will do", because every player who RPs does so. It's ridiculous. What I notice is a niche of roleplayers who, with their characters, attempt at every opportunity to publicly debate or attack each other. E-peen points? Maybe. Direct IC reasoning? Not really.

If the pilot's your enemy, shoot him and do the occasional remark. But spending almost eight years attempting the same thing over and over again is incredibly tedious, imo.

An alternative approach is to respect those who have stuck to their guns for eight years repeating themselves over and over because they have some spirit or intense loyality to their cause.

I have spirit and intense loyalty to causes IRL, but I don't constantly flame the "other side" no matter what they say even when it's unrelated to our points of disagreement... I see what the OP is trying to say and I tend to agree in general.

It's the exactly same mechanic that goes on in real life.

The loudest people are usually the most marginal and they like throwing stones at everyone that is different from them, constantly proving to themselves that they are better than others.

The problem is that we, as humans, have the tendency to listen to these people.

Mainly because we think that the loudest people represent the majority.

If the pilot's your enemy, shoot him and do the occasional remark. But spending almost eight years attempting the same thing over and over again is incredibly tedious, imo.

1. Shooting a person in EVE is a lot more difficult than entering into a debate.
2. Shooting a person that cannot die and has limitless access to wealth is really a pointless exercise.
3. Trying to shoot a person over and over again for 8 years is a lot more tedious than debating with him.

Expecting the IGS not to have debates is like expecting a parliament not to have debates.

People desire to be acknowledged. People desire to have others care about what they have to say. You might as well ask why so many trolls exist. A well-thought out and reasoned response gets only a fraction of the response a well-thought out troll post.

Why didn't anyone respond to the post above?

Ben, we're just lucky that, for the most part, the Goons keep to CAOD; I think we can tolerate the occasional IC flamewar in place of the Goons.

If we all made it a point to only threaten people we are actually willing to shoot at (or get other people to shoot at), we'd all be the better for it.

Arguing IC can be quite a bit of fun, and can keep people on their toes in a fun debate, but it's not always amusing or fun for either side.

Expecting the IGS not to have debates is like expecting a parliament not to have debates.

Personally, I see a large difference between "expecting the IGS not to have debates" and not wanting endless rehashing of the same positions without any substantive discussion. The back-and-forth of "OMG TRIBAL HEATHEN" and "DEATH 2 U SLAVER" doesn't strike me as interesting debate. Other people seem to enjoy it, and they of course have every right to do so.

But so much of IGS seems to devolve into that sort of flaming. And much of the rest seems to devolve into what I'll semi-politely call "mutual intellectual masturbation". I avoid IGS almost entirely now because of all this. As an additional but unfortunate side effect, I miss the genuinely interesting and imaginative content that undoubtedly exists there.

If only I had a better way to filter the good stuff out from the crap...

I used to be afraid to post on IGS because I was worried someone would come along and pick apart every tiny detail of my statement. I've since become aware that it's prettymuch inevitable, but I still don't post much because Cruci hasn't really had anything nice to say anyways.

vOv

There's all the various puppet alts too, to drum up publicity, or to argue points.

It's even more tedious than old debates.
