Names - Would you have picked differently?
« on: 28 Jul 2011, 12:46 »

In retrospect, I probably wouldn't have picked my generic Internet handle for Seriphyn, but probably something that fits in with the lore. As a VERY rough guide and ignoring subgroups (particularly Jin-Mei), the naming aesthetic seems to be Romantic/W.European for Gallente, Arabic/M.Eastern for Amarr, Nordic for Minmatar, and Finno-Japanese for Caldari. Yet, not all of our names fit that.

I'm not sure if "Inhonores" sounds like it could be Gallente; I would have looked up the agent names, who offer really good Romantic names that fit within the sci-fi universe, without sounding too lolFrench like the new random name generator. Perhaps system and constellation names too, for example, "Kiartanne Harner" (constellation and system). Badass imo.

But yeah, I'm sure it could be explained through the same reason that IRL a lot of Westerners have names that (technically) originate from the Middle East (or Near East if you want to be anal), eg. James, John, Matthew etc. That same reason could explain capsuleer naming?

Anyway, would people have picked their names to "fit" within the lore if they didn't go into the universe blind, before the new random generator?

I'm pretty happy with my names. Gender choices, less so...

Hell yes. "Baxter" sounds completely un-Caldari.

Indeed, I would never have picked John Revenent if I knew I was going to RP a Caldari Loyalist >.>

Not really, pretty happy with Misan. Might have changed the last name at least a bit though if I had known how much some forums/apps HATE apostrophes in usernames.  :s

I spent a while looking through Caldari agent names to get the rough phonology down for "Sinraali", so I think it's not too far off. "Ze'ev" I'll admit is a bit more of a stretch, but having to rationalize it has been fun enough.

Although I will admit I'm not entirely sure how it's supposed to be pronounced in Caldanese.

Nope. I chose specifically for how I wanted to RP her.

Debatable. On the one hand, my name confuses the hell out of people trying to pronounce it on voice comms. On the other hand... it's just that funny to joke about. Kind of an icebreaker thing. Or a Sebiestor war cry. <.< >.>

I like the implications of Gallentians being punched in the face by walking up to a Minmatar as they so freely use another person's culture as a fad.

Ghost worked well up until I became heavily involved in the RP scene.

These days his name works out still, since I've shoehorned a bullshit Caldari explanation for it.

I'd probably get him something more distinctly appropriate for a Sansha, though. Some iteration of his real name perhaps.

Yes. If I had designed my guy as an Intaki loyalist rather than had him evolve that way as I got into RP, I would definitely have chosen something more Intaki-sounding, rather than a joke name from my DnD group.

I'm happy with the name, but if I could, I'd change it to be the full "Ethan Verone".

I think I'd give Vieve a different last name.  I've never been crazy about some of the slang translations for 'Tisserand' (which I picked because a) it means 'Weaver' in French, and b) I'd played a 'Celeste Tisserand' in an AmberDRPG one-shot set in a Three-Musketeeresque version of Corwin's universe.  That Celeste was a timid secretary by day and a vicious do-gooding swordswoman by night.)

Perfectly happy with the name I picked.

Created the toon with RP in mind, so it made things a lot easier.
