I know I'm probably not the only one here who enjoys theory crafting fits for various ships and roles, so I was wondering if there was any support for the idea of a ship fitting sub forum on here? Just somewhere to post the fits we love, compare notes, and harass each other for putting a small cap booster on a battlecruiser ;)

I'm down for this

Not a bad idea. The Art of Boat-Violence-do for RPers.
-
I did in fact completely miss this section :P Thanks for the move Cia.
-
Up with this sort of thing.
-
Yeah, this is a sub forum I would post in.
-
i know we all play eve here, and we could discuss several ways to fit, but honestly i think it would be best if we leave that out, FHC and other sites already provide plenty of stuff to work with.

True, but there are plenty of people here who don't follow FHC or similar site due to the general tone of the place. I think that backstage has a much more friendly atmosphere (in my experience anyway) and so would be a good place to discuss fittings and tactics. There are also plenty of RPers who either already pvp or are looking to be involved in it, and a place where they can discuss ideas on combat with other RPers seems like a useful addition to the forum to me.
It need not even be a dedicated fittings section, maybe a more general 'combat' sub forum could be made with a place for ship fittings and explanation of piloting techniques could be made. Things like crew casualty numbers would also fit into the discussion.
Just throwing ideas out there :)

As long as people understand that the rules still apply there, I don't have anything against the idea.
Ship fitting tends to get pretty contentious, so, I just want people to keep that in mind.

I don't see the point of it that isn't already covered in better ways by other websites (battleclinic, etc). More personalized discussion, I guess.

This, is mostly why I am leery about it.

My particular wish for one is to provide actual advice and information to RPers looking for help with pvp, whatever their experience with it, that a site such as battleclinic would not neccesarily give. Also, lots of the fits on battleclinic are outdated or just not that great.
As much as I want this to be a place for fitting advice, I would also love it if there was space for people to talk aboit the experiences they've had with pvp, give battlereports of combat with IC enemies and provide feedback to each other on their style of combat.
I understand that fitting discussions and others like it have a habit of becoming heated, but as I mentioned earlier I also think that backstage has a calmer overall attitude than somewhere like FHC. Backstage is also in possession of an extremely effective and alert moderator team, unlike FHC where the mods are very relaxed, or battleclinic which features almost no moderation at all. I think that these things combined should help to keep any discussions reasonably civil.
The great thing about fitting is it doesn't matter if you don't like someone else's fit, you can just make your own :)
(Apologies for spelling and/or grammar, I wrote this on my phone :l )

Roleplayers are, for the most part, storytellers by nature. I think a subsection where people can describe their PvP experiences would be a cool idea as long as people aren't dicks about it. Sharing fittings is cool too, especially if a discussion pops up about other fits that might work in that same circumstance.
+1 to this idea!

For sure. I can understand the mod team's caution here—we've all seen someone being lambasted for asking a silly question, if not ourselves, or a discussion on fitting devolve into mudslinging—but there's merit to the idea, and I'll echo what kala said about providing practical pvp (or even pve) advice to newer players.
Backstage has a pretty significant viewership of both rookie and veteran players, facilitating gameplay knowledge between them in an environment they already feel comfortable seems worthwhile to me. Could be a place for not only fittings, but guides and stories and focused spaceship talk.

On the other hand the above would get my stamp of approval
One thing is the fit itself, another the story behind it and how it has worked in several occasions

This kind of stuff would generally work in the 'Guides, Mechanics, and Gameplay' section. If we get a huge number of fitting discussions, we can probably at that point provide a separate sub-forum for them.
-
I will admit I forgot that section existed.
-
Echoing the sentiment that there are simply better places for technical discussion than this board (personally, I've found the ship fitting sections of FHC to be only ones worth reading on that site, but ymmv). Compounded with the benefit of years of discussion, there's simply a much greater wealth of knowledge from so many more experienced posters relative to here. I don't think there's a compelling reason to create a new subforum here when there's also existing sections that could be used. As Silver points out, the GMG (oh god freelancer flashbacks) would work fine for technical discussions if people really wanted to have them here, and imo, the Eve Fiction + Fiction discussion would work fine for write-ups in the form of in-character battle reports / experience sharing.

I don't want to go reading FHC to get informed on pvp, current trends, and else. It's tiring and hurts my eyes.
If there is nothing here I will do it nevertheless, but there would be a huge benefit for me if it actually happened here with people I appreciate and trust more than a complete stranger.
-
"Cram a Damage Control somewhere" being the extend of my fitting expertise, seeing that most of the discussions on more specialized forums require a priori theorycrafting knowledge to simply understand what they're about, that more often than not the candides and unexperienced are greeted with "your fit is bad and you should feel bad" lines... I'm all in favor of a Backstage subforum dedicated to fits and fights discussions.

The guides section (which is currently quite underutilized) fits the purpose I think everyone is discussing pretty well. If someone wants to create and maintain a ship fitting thread index, we can certainly sticky it for easier reference.
-
I will. Gimme about half an hour to make/format the thread. :)
Edit: Done (http://backstage.eve-inspiracy.com/index.php?topic=4211.msg66640#msg66640).

Does this mean I should go spam 3 dozen "how to fit this ship and why" threads for 3 dozen different ships? :D
I love discussing fittings and my reasons for fitting them in the ways I do, and I hate FHC because it's full of [insert a long string of names and words that would likely get moderated here] and makes my eyes bleed to read for more than 5 minutes.
Their fitting section is also full of dumb.
Just sayin.
-
Feel free to start the threads - though I suggest spreading them out a bit if you want to get good discussions going.
-
If you do, I will link to them in the index thread.
If it makes the Guides forum unusable, I'm sure Silver can put a fitting sub-forum in there like we have in the Fiction and Corp Development areas. :)

Please do. :D I love theory crafting ships, but since I'm still out of game I have no ideas on current mechanics and what does/doesn't work. That and I haven't even played around in Pyfa for months, but I am curious to see what people run with.
I like FHC for the most part, but they can get really off topic with the discussions sometimes. Not to mention they all seem to fit for OGBs and full sets of whatever.
EDIT: Also I respect you a hell of a lot more than I do any of them, except maybe Prom since I do like his vids and sense of humor in them, so yeah +1 on the whole idea from me.
