Damn.  I can only imagine how the devs are taking this and I expect morale is at an all time low.   I think hiring more employees for the sake of having more empoyees was a mistake by Hilmar. However, I think firing one in five people will cause unrepairable damage to the trust the company has in him.

Dispite what pobably appeared at times to be frothing rage at CCP since 2006 its been at best a mild irritation.  Right I feel bad for Hilmar the rest of CCP and I hope the company grows stronger from this.

Names I've heard so far are Fallout, Hammerhead, and Zymurgist.  I can confirm Fallout as I've read his blog about it already.  I know of another but don't know her CCP name for sure.  The sad part is they're cutting all of the people not responsible for CCP's fuckups.  These are "acceptable collateral damage" as far as CCP is concerned and the fuckwits that got us here are still employed.

CCP MaidenSteel?

I believe so.

EDIT:  +Wrangler, Gnauton, Valar, Finnz, and possibly Dropbear, but that's not confirmed.

I can't decide if I'm incredibly sad or angry or both.

If Dropbear is gone, there won't be any reason for me to resub in November.

'Nuff said.

No word from Dropbear yet. I'm worried.  :ugh:

Dropbear hasn't responded to any prods, and he's one of my best friends IRL, so I'm very worried about him.

Today I'm reminded of why I'm a democratic socialist. Too many good, talented people have just lost their jobs. This is late-capitalism in action. None of management -- the source of the problem -- have stepped down or even taken a pay cut.

I know one of the outgoing people on a "have met in person, occasionally talk on Twitter" sense but not his CCP handle - he was a programmer who moved over to design and last I knew was on WoD.

Mixed feelings.  Obviously, sucks for those in the crossfire.  Not understanding why some of the better-known people on the Eve side are out, doesn't bode well for us that it includes a good chunk of the Event/Lore people. Do understand "trying to do too many things at once", and that when you reduce those things, some people's jobs are going to become redundant.  Have read comments on Gamasutra from people who have gone through similar saying that this may actually help CCP. Do want to see Eve being excellent.  Do think that anyone who says the CCP brass aren't taking this seriously after today are morons...it's hard to get more serious, whether you agree with the method or not.

@Kyoko: I swear I'll drop the subject after this (else flame war is likely) but didn't want the political note to pass unchallenged.  Should a government be in the business of taking a game company to task for the consequences of what amount to poor project management?  Whether the management taking a hit is something that should have happened or not, CCP's a private company; to my knowledge they don't have a board of directors or any sort of internal governance that would facilitate the top guys stepping down without things falling apart.  (I've been covering this stuff in a "society and business" course I have to take for the degree I want to go after, so I'm only recently having any idea what any of that means.)  In a way, Eve is still "their baby", even if the relationship has been strained lately.

There's a certain sense of inevitability to this. We are living in tough times, and CCP's senior management have made some poor decisions over the past few years. Will any of them walk? Doubtful, but we'll see.

As ever, though, the people that get hoofed out will be the wrong people. You always see this when redundancies are announced. Those slimy asslicking blowhards that infest and multiply in every company always seem to cling on even though they do nothing of value to the company except suck corporate sausage and lower morale by their continued presence. Meanwhile, the good guys get cast aside.

Dust is the biggest problem, imo. I just can't see how a PS3-exclusive shooter will work for CCP. If it was on the PC, it'd probably have worked. Most Eve players would probably have checked it out. Lots of former Eve players would too. Sure, plenty of people play games on multiple platforms, but equally, plenty don't. A PS3 exclusive automatically alienates a large percentage of your existing consumer base. Dumb. A WoD MMO seems like a surer thing in the long term. I guess Dust is just too far down the road to drop now, though.

On a personal note, I'd be pretty sad if Gnauton and Dropbear were among the casualties. I put them firmly in the 'good guy' category.

Dropbear is confirmed as safe, so that's good news at least.

I hate to tell CCP this, but it looks like Dust 514 is going to have to compete with Sony's Planetside 2. I just don't see that working.

At all.
