I'd guess that if they track down what botnet or where the DDoS is largely coming from, it would answer those questions.
I understand that tracking the command servers of a botnet (which by definition is slave machines taken over) is a less than trivial task.

Financial damages from this will likely be considered severe enough to be investigated somewhat thoroughly, though.

Eugh. It's not fucking LulzSec again is it?

I sure hope not, those losers don't deserve any more attention and this would give it to them if they were involved.

Then again they would likely be bragging about it so, I'm guessing we will know soon enough if they are involved or no.

So, I am thinking it is some script kiddie or maybe a contracted job. The kind of botnet this would take would have to be pretty established.  It seems unlikely that someone would burn a phishing/income net just to troll a video game.  So my money is on contracted job.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Probably an attempted smash and grab for details - overload server, expose vulnerabilities in SSO, steal datas.

Not really expecting and 'from the shadows' motives - standard theft attempt.

They shut down all of their servers including the ones that host the domains.

The an attack like this isn't about theft, if fact it is pretty much the worst thing you can do if you are.  It is simply someone overloading their servers specifically to bring them down.

My guess is that their website is within the same network as the game servers.

Read a thing that said that some Lithuanian websites are being attacked, due to something about the Eurovision result.

It would be :| if this is part of an escalation of that.

A backdoor trojan was installed with the launcher update, everyone who has eve installed is part of the botnet.
