What languages can your characters speak?
« on: 05 Jun 2011, 16:31 »

While it is mostly redundant with translators, not everyone will have one (like baseliners). I expect most of our characters have the cliche of being multilingual, but that's the result of being an international, boundless figure. So...one language that is native, languages that they are fluent in, and languages they can speak brokenly (and whether or not they can read/write it or just speak it). Also, whether they learnt it through study or acquired it through necessity

Seriphyn Inhonores
Caldanese/Napaani (native)
Gallentean (fluent, acquired) - Requirement of environment/education
Amarish (broken, illiterate, acquired) - Previously fluent. Requirement of environment; Minmatar-dominated community
Ji (broken, illiterate, acquired) - Necessity during peacekeeping tour to Lirsautton
Intaki (broken, illiterate, acquired) - Requirement of capsuleer duties

Anette
Gallentean (native)
Amarish (fluent, learnt) - Requirement of education
Ji (fluent, acquired) - Requirement of family
Caldanese/Napaani (fluent, illiterate, acquired) - Requirement of family

Xiuying
Ji (native)
Gallentean (fluent, acquired) - Requirement of education/environment

Kiam Arreiz
Caldanese/Napaani (native)
Gallentean (fluent, learnt) - Chosen course during higher education

Math'ra Hiede
Ammarish - (Native language) Heavy Khanid Throne Worlds accent
Caldanese/Napaani - (Native language) Being Khanid and raised in the Kingdom means you learn Caldari early on
Amarrad - (Competent, Learnt) Learnt at Imperial Navy Academy and as part of Officer training, considered a formal language
Matari Dialects - (broken, mostly-illiterate, acquired) Previously fluent and litterate due to extensive under-cover operations in Matari owned regions
Gallentean - (Broken, illiterate, barely acquired) Requirement of foreign operations as a Capsuleer, least practiced or cared about.

Lilen en Dama
Gallentean (native)
Intaki (native)
Napanii (passable, college-level study; local Caldari dialects are mostly unintelligible to her)
Everything else (because, well, implants and translator)

Silas, sans implants can do:

Ammarish - (Native language) Formal Holder Accent
Caldanese/Napaani - (Competent, learnt) Taught as a young adult, as many in the Kingdom eventually are.
Amarrad - (Competent, Learnt) Taught as a child, much like in modern days some learn latin
Matari Dialects - (very little) Deemed completely unworthy of time or effort.
Gallentean - (Competent, learnt) Taught as young adult, as some children of Holders would be as part of any rigorous educational upbringing

I will make a distinction that although Silas understands these languages she rarely -speaks- them, at least publicly, as she generally considers uttering foreign tongues beneath her.

Khanid, fluent, nobility/Holder accent. Native/Acquired.
Modern Standard Matari, fairly perfect lack of accent. Acquired.
Gripdjur dialect, norse inspired (OoC roots) with heavy Amarrish roots. Acquired, with somewhat poor pronunciation.
Thukker sign language, rudimentary grasp of it, acquired recently.

Intaki (Learnt, fairly fluent) - 'High' dialect taught in schools, but with words from southern hemisphere dialect thrown in, especially Ganga River Valley region.
Amarrish (Fluent, from schooling in Khanid Kingdom)

Valdezi

Amarrish (Native, fluent)
Gallentean (Learnt, fluent, Intaki accent, from tutor)
Intaki (Learnt, slightly less fluent)

Sure, I'll bite.

Kyoko Sakoda

Caldari (Kimotoro-area dialect; Native)
Napanii (Native)
Gallentean (with a thick but easily understandable Kimotoro accent; fluent, learned from a young age)

For what it's worth I consider the Caldari to have their own distant dialects of Napanii, much like the Scandinavian languages are closely related to one another and are child languages of Old Norse.

Cruci speaks fluent asshole.

But really she was born and raised with 'Modern Standard Matari' as Mizhara put it. Her time in Outer Ring would have led her to pick up at least a little Standard Gallentean while living on ORE stations, but barely. Recently she's begun to learn Napanii while living in Curse which she prefers over Gallentean for its simplicity. She is not terribly cultured.

Nikita Alterana
Thukker Tribal Language - (fluent, literate, Native, speaks with a nullsec accent) Learned as the primary trade language on her homeworld, and her first language.
Sebiestor Tribal Language - (fluent, literate, Native, speaks with a nullsec accent) Learned as the spoken language on her homeworld, learned concurrently with Thukker.
Modern Standard Matari - (Fluent, literate, learned, Primary language) Learned in the cartel, speaks with a noticeable nullsec/thukker accent, her default language except for when she's angry, when she slips into old thukker matari
Thukker sign language - (fluent, native) Learned along with thukker and sebiestor  on her homeworld.
Amarrish - (passable, somewhat literate, acquired) formerly fluent, acquired on her homeworld, as the most widely spoken language there, she interacts with Amarrians enough to keep it mostly decent sounding, though she speaks with a heavy matari accent.
Gallentean - (somewhat passable, mostly illiterate, learned) taught by her mother, mostly fallen out of use, if she's around gallentean speakers enough, she can generally piece together what they're saying, will probably make a fool of herself if she tries to speak in it though.
Caldanese/Napanii - (broken, acquired, illiterate) learned during her career with the cartel special forces.

You know, I'd like to reply to this thread, but explaining what Mata speaks gives too much away. *wry smile*

If you do a fairly cursory search you'll find that:
[spoiler]
It's on the record that Mata was studying at the Republic School of Dance when she was found to be probably pod-compatible, and that at the time the RSD required functional fluency in both Modern Standard Matari and Gallentean.

Anything more than that you'll have to roleplay for.

Mithfindel (Intaki):
- Akat region Intaki (illiterate, speaks with some fluency)
- Standard Gallentean (writes and speaks well)
- Standard Caldanese (writes and speaks well)
- Old Deteis/Napanii (basic reading, cannot write, comprehends, basic speaking)
- Amarrish (writes and speaks well)
Mithfindel's Intaki is basically family language. Since the family doesn't live in the Federation, he has an accent and a small vocabulary. He acquired Gallentean in school and it was the language he studied with. He works with modern Caldari, though. In addition, Mithfindel has stayed a few years in the Empire, speaking with an accent (can speak near-perfect Amarrish with cybernetic help).

Axel Kurki (Civire):
- Standard Caldanese (writes and speaks, native)
- Napanii (basic reading and writing, speaks with a heavy Lonetrek accent)
- Standard Gallentean (reads and comprehends, basic writing and speaking)
- Amarrish (illiterate, basic phrases)
Axel's native language is the modern standard Caldari language. He learned some Napanii at school, but is not fluent in "the Deteis language". He also learned Gallentean at school to the degree where he isn't completely lost without a translator on a Gallentean station and can order food at the restaurant without resorting to the pointing fingers at the menu technique etc. During his stays in Amarr he has picked enough to be smiled at on Amarr stations and get beaten on Minmatar stations.

- Akat region Intaki dialect (Native, fluent) Learned as a primary language during her upbringing

- Ancient Intaki Dialect(s) (Native, fluent [product of rebirth]) Strong memories of previous incarnations, as well as frequent communication with other reborn has maintained a variety of ancient dialects no longer recognisably in use.

- Gallentean (Learned, fluent) mandatory as a part of Federation supported private schooling.  Reinforced by her University education.

- Caldanese (Learned, broken [audio parsing implant assisted fluency]) Learned on the fly as a trade language, though Aelisha has intimate and complete knowledge of linguistic structures to a text book standard due to neural imprinting technology (skillbooks), she is somewhat unfamiliar with the pace and accents that she encounters in the State.  To this end many of her jump clone are augmented with an audio parsing chip to enable swift interpretation.  Her original body remains completely un-augmented for spiritual reasons and thus does not benefit from the implant.
