Title: So, that timer on EVE-O...
Post by: Esna Pitoojee on 29 Jan 2014, 12:41
This timer (http://community.eveonline.com/) started a 7-day countdown recently. No clarification on what it is for, though there's been plenty of speculation that it's something Valkyrie-related.

Thoughts/idea/serious info? Any conventions or fanmeets that this might correspond with for a major announcement?

Some ideas from twitter include:
- CSM minutes
- Punkturis' first devblog since returning from maternity leave
- Summer expansion features
- Valkyrie/Dust stuff

I would also toss announcements of release dates for True Stories and/or EVE: Source onto the list.

Also, 3pm local on a Wednesday is an odd time for them to do announcements (they usually wait a few more hours in my experience, into the USTZ afternoon), so it may not be something 'standard'.

If that's the case, it's seven days off and counting in the wrong direction.

CCP and TianCity have made a secret deal with the Chinese government allowing them to merge Tranquility and Serenity.

Also, might be an NEO-related announcement. They said they'd have the initial brackets set up about a week or so after the team list was announced.

This is my bet. You can pre-order EVE: Source on Amazon now.

Yep. I'm with Jace.

It's way too early for summer expansion announcements, which I expect will be at Fanfest, as usual.

That leaves Valkyrie or Source.

Yeah, that was pretty much the reaction I was expecting to that one. I suggested that one on Twitter yesterday as a joke, which is why I included it here. :P

I can't imagine it being anything but Source or a novel. As I said, Source is pre-orderable on Amazon. That implies it is coming fairly soon.

I have it on good authority that the stone it is crafted from is our condensed disappointment, and the names were etched using the reactionary tears generated as a half million boners were abruptly and violently quelled.

It says all active "main" characters will be on it. How exactly will the decide who is a "main" character?

about the monument

The monument is an a outdoor sculpture by the artist Sigurður Guðmundsson with help and input from EVE Online‘s own art directors Börkur Eiríksson and Ásgeir Jón Ásgeirsson. It will stand at over five meters tall and will consist of two main elements facing each other through a highly polished stainless steel surface in the middle that reflects and mirrors the elements and the landscape. On the left side of the model stands a dark aluminum structure with a quote from the EVE Universe and on the right a dark granite facial figure representing the players behind the game.

The monument will stand atop a half meter tall metal-plated concrete platform that will have the names of all the “main characters” of all active EVE Online players etched upon it. This list of active, paying players will be captured on March 1st, 2014—no exceptions. In addition, CCP will be honoring EVE Online players who have passed away by adding their names to the monument, as described in the following section.

Under the monument a buried laptop will serve as a time capsule with videos, messages, wishes and more from the players and the development staff. A web-based application will assist in finding specific names on the monument‘s surface. More on the time capsule will be announced at www.eve.com/monument

The monument will be unveiled on Wednesday April 30th, a day before Fanfest 2014, the annual gathering celebrating the EVE Universe held at Harpa Concert and Convention Center in downtown Reykjavik. At the event, thousands of EVE Online, DUST 514 and EVE: Valkyrie players will witness the dedication in a special ceremony that will include CCP staff, city officials, friends, and family.

In 2013, EVE Online was honored by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the “Applied Design“ exhibition of the Museum‘s Philip Johnson Galleries and formally inducted into the permanent collection in the inaugural group of video games alongside thirteen others such as Tetris, Pac-Man, and The Sims.

Another effort to celebrate EVE Online players, Skyward Sphere, was launched multiple times in 2012 and brought EVE players to the edge of space first through an ascending escape pod and then, more successfully, inside a Minmatar Rifter as players watched via livestream -- SkywardSphere

This newly confirmed monument extends the efforts CCP has at creating a truly unique universe, in this case through a landmark that bridges the gap between the real world and the virtual.

Most likely the character with the most SP. Logic says that the one you sink most training time into is going to be your 'main'.

Deadie, Nicole and Nikita are about to get put onto a monument \o/

Okay, I take back my annoyance. After reading the four pages on the site they put up, this is pretty cool. As long as we get Source this year as well, I'm happy.

I'm tempted to reactivate all of my accounts just for that month, so I can get Kucial Kinan, Cuci Cairi, Jace Sarice, and Brock on there.

Snapshot of all active accounts on March 1st, highest skilled character of each account is used. Is unveiled the day before fanfest '14 starts and is being donated to the city of Reykjavik as a thank you for their continued support.

Actually very cool. I might have to resub to get Kala's name on there :P

I'm trying to figure out if Brock will overtake Cuci in SP by then...I think he will with his implants. I was planning to move him to a different account at some point, though. Anyway, much cool to be had all around.

Well, I guess that's cool.

Admittedly, a Source announcement would've been meh (we've already figured that out). More substantive info on Valkyrie would've been pretty nifty. It's also rather early for summer expansion information, as well, so. vOv

You'd think the cost of building this thing will far outweigh anything they'll make from one-month resubs.

One-month resubs? Sure! But if a hundred vets come back and go, "Oh, hey, this game is better than when I left it..."

Then I would support the plan, whether that was any of their motivation or not. If you can trick people I like into being back in-game, I will bake you cookies. Nice chewy ones, not Brock hard cookies.

I'm reminded of all the different organizations that have asked me for money over the years to get my name on a brick or a plaque or etched in stone on a building.

Shameless marketing subscription drive.

I wonder if they will actually engrave all of the 'interesting' names like P3N1S M4STER_006  and similar we get to see in local sometimes.

Glad you all are excited but I'm just not feeling it.  I want all that money spent on devs and artists and programmers and writers and hiring back all the people they laid off.

I've just had a minor revelation about this monument thingy: EVE already has a monument, and in many ways it's considerably better than the one CCP is planning.

Not sure how many out there are aware, but the Musem of Modern Art in New York City has a display about EVE (alongside several other 'notable' video games such as Dwarf Fortress and Myst). For those of you who haven't seen it, it's a wall-mounted display with a cluster map (the same one we see in the ingame map viewer), some screens displaying footage of some visually better fights, and a few text info panels.

And, IMO, it works far better as a monument to EVE as a game then some wierd abstract art-thingy with a bunch of names on it (if CCP's monument had a rifter 'in flight' over a list of names, I might be somewhat more sympathetic. Only somewhat, though). The museum exhibit makes it clear that we were included because we built something cool with our own efforts.

The only thing I can really say I approve of in CCP's exhibit is the ability to include the names of players who have passed away.

Why players who have passed away ? I am totally sympathetic to their case but how does that makes them more important than the living ? How does that make their family happier in any case ?

From a purely pragmatic point of view, those who have passed (may they rest in peace) have little need of identifying elements such as names being obscured (though I assume permission of the relatives or media exposure prior to engraving would be required so as to be respectful).

A living player may, should they desire it, create an account with their name as the highest Sp character before March 1st if they wish their real name to be edified.  Our deceased fellow players do not have that power.

This being the entire point.

CCP are allowing people to request the addition of the names of those who have passed away, as they can (rather obviously) not do it themselves.

A point was made elsewhere that the inclusion of living players is actually the departure from plan - originally the monument was meant to be specifically for those we've lost along the way.

While it's kinda neat, the idea of having my characters' names put to stone or w/e, I can't really disagree.
Title: Re: So, that timer on EVE-O...

They maybe should have kept to their original idea. I can't help but feel that mixing up both lessens the value put on the initial posthumous message. And it feels disjointed.
