I sometimes wish I hadn't given up on Astropolitan Front. Especially when I now and again read about someone who wanted to join it, but when they looked, it was gone. That triggers some serious feelings of regret sometimes.

That being said, I've had a lot of fun in the Sansha RP scene. It's made up of some thoroughly nice and truly awesome people.

Hmm. Second regret: playing a character that everyone assumed was a lesbian when, in fact, she was just interested in people (male or female) with specific outlooks on life. Strangely, the only ones that openly fit the particular criteria were female personas. There were a couple male characters she was attracted too for these reasons, but you know, they never once paid her any attention; or when they did, made it clear that other criteria that made them unsuitable for a relationship would crop up.

OOC, in regards to her sexuality I would just say, "Yeah, she's a lesbian, lol." Inside I kind of died a little each time, because I had created a pretty deep character that everyone just reduced to 'look, just another space lesbian'.

Other issues with that character aside, my favorite RP experience was my character "coming out" to a character she liked. I knew the response it would get. Obviously she was going to be shot down. I had done enough research to know that the other character was involved in another relationship, etc. It was just so awesome because it took years to get the character into a position to ask, and a few months to set up a situation where it would be appropriate to ask.

I've just always enjoyed a challenge, and playing something interesting and just enough out of the norm to make even social interaction a chore held a certain fascination for a time.

For Makkal: So far, so good.

Jev is spot-on with the issue about "space lesbians": I rarely could criticize any individual case, but the sheer volume gets a little overwhelming. I have a few theories about why this happens, more than just "lol nerds and 2girlsdoinit", but they'd be off-topic here.
That's how I feel about complaints about space lesbians.

I have no regrets playing previous characters and I wouldn't do anything differently even if I find no motivation or interest in wearing their masks. What I did learn though is:

- It's good to be grounded: There's nothing wrong in being somewhat 'normal' and having a character that holds strong ideals or convictions, whatever they may be, even if they are a terrifying demigod. The struggle to retain ones own sense of self and humanity in the face of overwhelming violence and destruction can be an interesting exploration. The total loss is a pit that can be difficult to dig a character out of.

- Simplicity is fun: Complication can be good but an over-complication of events and circumstances can be difficult to resolve, especially when trying to figure out how to make all the pieces fit properly in their place.

- Familiarity doesn't always breed contempt: Whilst it's interesting to explore a character that in some respects be polar opposites in a variety of ways to the player using them, there's a risk of having the character become such an antithesis that they are reprehensible to play. At times it's good to have some sort of familiar threads to pull in a character so that things are comfortable.

I wouldn't do anything differently because all my attempts to self-destroy my own character/s due to the amount of loathing I had for them as a player actually led to all sorts of interesting interactions and the chance to run off and experiment with all sorts of things until now I'm in the position I can use that experience to fully realize characters that I do actually find interesting, engaging and fun to interact with.

That or I'm just slightly deranged and/or insane. I don't know some days.

There is another thing I noticed, and not sure if it works for everyone or if it is just me. But explorating eve RP and sometimes complex political setting through the eyes of someone else actually did not lead to the usual IC/OOC bleedover where the OOC player starts to speak through the character ICly, but to the opposite actually : being more and more influenced and tainted by the character itself, when said character starts to get enough depth and gets strong and well defined enough to make her believable and her opinions enticing enough.

That is somewhat disturbing.

I can certainly empathize with that.

This. So much this.

The scariest moments I've had with Katla are the ones where I'm looking at some of the arguments I'm putting in her mouth and thinking: "This actually makes sense."

Hmmm...

Rok - Specialised.... i have generalised his skillset FAR too much... he could have been an industrial god by now... :(

Dilaro - Not much really... the whole EoM thing was fun and gave him a bit of a story... even if it is a crazy one.

Yuni - Thought more about how to make her as a character before jumping onto IGS... those first few weeks were... messy. still, the character concept fell into place pretty quickly, and the basics have always remained the same. now.. how do i get hold of an infested CONCORD battleship..... :P

You talking about your own character? Not you as Lyn, I mean, just in general.

In my case mostly, but I bet some people's opinions can get tainted by other characters too, and I have probably been at some unconscious level.

In which case Lyn...yeah...I think Seriphyn has had a creepy influence on my view of democracy/free society. Especially that the Fed exists in a world where democracy is not the expected standard, as it is IRL.

To paraphrase a quote from the best tv series of all time:

"You don't play Dungeons and Dragons for so many years and not learn a little something about courage."

Like some others here, I might have looked at a different name. I find it difficult to take my character seriously when its named after a breakfast cereal.

Oh, why not.  Things I wish I could have done differently.

Not make Sai such a clone of RL me in some things.  There are so many things I could have done if I hadn't made Sai as timid etc etc as I was at the time.  Whenever I get back, I was hoping to sorta change some of that, but, eh, we'll see.

Not come up with such overblown IC reasons for Sai taking a break from piloting.  I'm glad that this time I just said she's going planetside.  I'd probably have to biomass her otherwise.

Ehhhh, yeah I can say this.  I  wish I had really stepped on getting into a carrier so I could have embarrassed Evanda IC before we both left EM.  I had been working on that plotline forever it seemed.

I don't regret Sai being a space lesbian, since at the time I didn't know about lolspacelesbians, and I think I tried to play her straight (oh that was bad), but I do rather regret making RP alts to fill up roles of friend or lover since then some other player couldn't fill those roles.  And on the same note, I regret that Sai is still my main, since those RP alts I made were a lot more fun to play with (at least for me, *smile*), but Sai still has all of the skill points, so its far easier to have her do something rather than waiting three months for an alt to train up the skills.

And I regret never having enough time to do things properly.  Hopefully that will change whenever I get back.
