Iain M. Banks is dying
« on: 03 Apr 2013, 06:44 »

There isn't much to say about the actual dying part that isn't in this link.

Iain M. Banks has added a lot to the world of science fiction, and I know a lot of people here read and enjoy his words, both as Iain M. Banks and Iain Banks.

Do you see it now?  Something is different.  Something is never was in the first part!

I admire his courage in facing this news, the grace with which he has presented it and continues to live what time is left to him is a model of dignity and strength.

My prayers and thoughts will go with him and his new wife.

May his final days be in peace and happiness. The world will be a lesser place without him.

I like the implications of Gallentians being punched in the face by walking up to a Minmatar as they so freely use another person's culture as a fad.

Quote
Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep seas swell
And the profit and loss.
                          A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
He passed the stages of his age and youth
Entering the whirlpool.
                          Gentile or Jew
O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

...so sad.

Gutted tbh. Banks is one of my favourite authors and a decent chap too. I loved his books as Iain Banks as well as the science fiction books as Iain M Banks. The Wasp Factory was an astonishing debut, and while not much of his later work matched that for the sheer shock value, he far exceeded it in terms of ideas and character as he grew as a writer.

Also, I fucking love The Culture. It's exactly my kind of utopia-but-not-quite-really and if I'm honest, it has gone some way to shaping my ideas of what we should aspire to as a species.

Adams, Douglas - Heart Disease.
Pratchett, Terry - Alzheimers.
Banks, Iain M. - Cancer.

Fuck more than Cancer, IMO.

Why do you think George R.R. Martin is pretty certain that he will never finish the songs of fire and ice?
