Title: Gambling and the Caldari
Post by: Silver Night on 20 Aug 2010, 01:47
There seems to be some indication that a certain cultural love of gambling exists in the State.

Quote from: Caldari Intro
To curb their aggressive tendencies, the Caldari actively pursue and sponsor a range of sporting activities. Many of these are bloody, gladiatorial-like competitions, while others are more like races. But whatever the sport, the Caldari love betting on the outcome, making gambling a massive industry in the State.

Caldari Intro (http://www.eveonline.com/races/caldari.asp)

The Mindclash chron (http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/default.asp?cid=feb01) also mentions 'Caldari gambling halls.'

While I was looking for the this, I also stumbled across this thread (http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1309634), where Dropbear mentions this article (http://www.eveonline.com/news.asp?a=single&nid=1848&tid=6).

It seems to me this is a little explored side of Caldari, and somewhat out of the common (IC) 'corporate drone' stereotype.

That is rather interesting, tbh. However on a slight side-note, I'd like to argue that the stereotypical 'corp drone' viewpoint was hardly any more than negative 'anti-Caldari' propaganda, much like that idea that all Federals are dope-heads who party without end in a decadent and depraven society. It never appeared to me to be a prevailent idea or view, but rather an oft used 'argument' by detractors. Ofc, some of those might be due to the players not doing much research before opening thier character's mouths.

Anyhow, anyone recall the scene in Gariushi's back-story where Les Akillen or whats-his-name was observing a splintzer match along with his hired concubines? That scene would 'typify' the false 'dope-head' idea about Gallente, and here it was used on Caldari - was a wake-up call to me that Caldari was rather more diverse and deep than merely corporate-shills.

Damn it, de-rail on the very first page even... Okay so if we keep talking of typified 'anti-X' propaganda views we should likely make a split-topic. Don't wanna trash the topic of Caladri gambling habits completely.

It comes up in TBL...
Wherein Tibus Heth himself gets involved in a plot to use gambling to find out one of his advisers isn't trustworthy, by arranging for a player on a Mindclash team to take a dive and then a not-dive.
The bookie in that section says the

Quote
Gambling is as much a part of our life here as competition is, and competition is very much part and percel of the State. But one's allowed and the other is not, at least in Tarn's own case.

Well, we know about Splinterz and Mindclash.

What other kind of games might there be? By way of guessing?

It seems that the ones that are more like sporting events are likely to often be violent?

Sort of separately, what about games of chance? Are casinos common in the State? Maybe it's a corp by corp thing?

Working-class Caldari don't seem to live a life of luxury.  I'm sure the old standbys (dice, cards, etc.) would still be around.

Well that event all the security corps hold is a pretty big source of gambling, innit? You know, where all of the personnel get together and their best men compete in a series of events that regularly end with death?

I don't recall if they mentioned a specific portion of the security branches, but I think it was mentioned that it was a big gambling event.

People probably bet on the outcomes of podder events too. Wars and what alliance will get disbanded next and whatnot.

For a society that values competition, and is highly capitalistic, gambling seems to be a natural extension of Caldari values really.

Damn straight!!
Quote from: Masks Of Authority
Betting on the event is strictly illegal, but it nonetheless creates underground gambling revenue far exceeding that of any official State sporting or entertainment event.
