Title: [Collaboration] Dam-Torsad Tour (IC)
Post by: Aria Jenneth on 07 Mar 2015, 10:07
This thread is for the in-character portion of this project. Amarrian roleplayers are welcome to help worldbuild this holiest of cities; others are asked to please limit themselves to listening quietly. The coordinating portion of this project may be found here (http://backstage.eve-inspiracy.com/index.php?topic=6510.0); participants may use that area to brainstorm and bounce ideas around without Aria's OOC knowledge.

----

The dropship plunges into planetary atmosphere, compressing the air ahead of it into a wave front of plasma.

On board, one small passenger bounces about in her harness, eyes serenely closed as the turbulence repeatedly tries to throw her at the ceiling, though her pallid features are even paler than usual.

In much of New Eden, she'd be peculiar traveler, what with the long, loose skirts and voluminous shawl. The garments are plain at a glance: a simple, black dress and pleated skirt paired with a wrap of black wool long enough to virtually be a cloak, a band of black enamel around the left wrist her only jewelry. Closer examination, however, reveals intricate lace panels and embroidery hidden in the skirt pleats, all black on black, and the knotwork around the shawl fringe is enormously, pointlessly elaborate. The more attention is paid, the clearer it becomes that this is masterwork tailoring masquerading as peasant garb.

The ship gives a particularly strong jostle, and her eyes flash wide, serenity snuffed in an instant as she struggles to maintain her composure.

"I-- I'm okay," she reassures her companion, though her voice is shaking as much as the ship. "It's not my first drop."

Here, it's less the garb and more those almond-shaped eyes the silver-black hue of polished hematite, the faintly golden cast of her features, and her birdlike fragility that are unusual, marks of an ethnicity that's rare anywhere outside the Okkamon constellation in the Caldari State. The Achura are a hermit people, as reclusive as it's possible for a bloodline to be and still play a role in New Eden's family of interstellar civilizations.

She closes her eyes once more.

"It's my third," she admits as the mask of serenity drops back into place.

Her breathing eases along with the turbulence as the dropship descends towards Dam-Torsad, but she doesn't open her eyes again until the ship is on the ground.

The ship still, the airlock hissing, she detaches herself from her harness, hikes her shawl up over the top of her head, takes a slow, deep breath, and steps towards the hatch, black little eyes peering from beneath a dark forelock for a first glimpse of the city beyond.

Arkon stood on the platform dressed much as he always in a blue robe which suited him splendidly. There was a light breeze this early morning in Dam-Torsad and it gathered the hem of his robes causing them to billow slightly. The sun was just beginning to truly rise above the horizon; Arkon felt its rays on the back of his neck – a comfortable and caressing warmth.

He was flanked by two officers of the Ministry of Internal Order; their golden uniforms looking like fine sand against the blue of Arkon’s blue robes. He had personally requested their presence to ensure a safe and comfortable visit, though of course even if he hadn’t the MIO would have assigned them anyway.

As the sound of prayers began to weave their way between buildings and lifting a hundred thousand voices to the very heavens themselves Arkon could only murmur.

O Dam-Torsad. My country. City of my soul.

A warm and wide smile found his face as the thought of the city in which he stood, how often had he visited here? And never once had he found the city wanting, all images of the city did it no justice, they give only imperfect ideas of the unsullied beauty of Dam-Torsad. He sighed warmly only in Dam-Torsad was it possible to understand Dam-Torsad.

One of the MIO fellows pointed out a shuttle looming into view; Arkon nodded and set about straightening his robes a little. The shuttle touched down and once the door and ramp lowered to revel the figure dressed in elegant black Arkon smiled and bowed deeply.

Ms. Jenneth, a pleasure…” The MIO men also bowed, and as Arkon rose an arm swept out to reveal the vista, “… Welcome to Dam-Torsad, the Imperial City.

Arkon new better than most, he was a frequent visitor to Dam-Torsad, that a single vista of that most ancient and glorious city contained more beauty and more history than anywhere else in New Eden.

Aria's eyes widened a little at the first sight of the city, but turned almost at once to Arkon and the gathered escort. She returned the bow-- very much the gesture of a foreigner still picking up the niceties, albeit one who'd been getting some practice.

"Mr. Sarain. Thank you again for this opportunity."

Her eyes flicked over the MIO officers one by one, but quickly returned to the dawn-touched vista. She stepped forward for a better view.

Mean while in the central Torsad district, the golden spires of the myriad cathedrals and Imperial offices gleamed in the morning sun.  The streets far below, bustled with activity as pedestrians and assorted ground cars moved to and thro with the morning commute.  Air cars hovered between the towers, like a condor hanging on a morning breeze.  The sprawl of Dam-Torsad extends in all directions.

Shifting our point of view further down towards the ground level, at the edge of Torsad , is a large square with finely cut grass and criss-crossed with paths of gold .  A long procession of sisters clad in robes in Sarumite colors are proceeding eastwards from the forbidding cloistered walls of the Abbey of the Little Sisters of the Most Blessed Sword to the frescoed walls of the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sword.  To the side of the Chapel is a building tower labeled “offices” where guests and outsiders could visit with the Sisters.

Slaves and their handlers and commoners part as the women proceed through the large space.  The air is filled with their song.  The song blends with the carillon bells calling the faithful in the square area to morning prayer.  At the end of the procession, an open sedan chair is being lifted by four slaves.  A closer view reveals its occupant:

The Lady Abbess Benedicta Secheh, Holder, Mother Superior of the Order of the Little Sisters of the Most Blessed Sword and the Prioress of their Mother House on Sarum Prime III.

Oblivious to the stateliness of the procession, she was busily signing papers and handing them without ceremony to several sisters who were panting trying to keep up with the chair.

After the morning’s business was done and the procession made its way to the entrance of the Cathedral, the stolid 60 something woman disembarked from the chair.  Gazing without expression, the golden antlers of her ceremonial headdress and necklace with a religious symbol caught the morning sun.  Her high-necked dress in Sarumite colors extended to her feet which, somewhat anachronically, was clad by a pair of sturdy, sensible shoes.

Stating a firm “Ave” to those with her, she huffed as she steadily and slowly climbed the stairs and proceeded to enter into the Cathedral and for the first time, her voice rose in song.   The procession continued through a crowd of standing worshipers who kept their focus intently on the altar, daring not to converse or seem distracted.  Light filtered into through the windows illuminating the glitter, mosaic strewn walls of the Chapel.  Several security officers at the back of the Cathedral could be seen, clad in brown robes concealing the accoutrements of their trade.

Concluding the procession, the sisters filed into a choir loft on either side of the Altar, with the Abbess joining the Prelate, where, the two of them faced the Altar and cried as one when the song of prayer ended “Deus vult!”  The assembled crowd fell as one to prostrate themselves on their hands and knees.

The honour is all mine, Ms. Jenneth.

Arkon steps aside to allow Aria a better view of the most modern vista of Dam-Torsad, golden spires connected by mag-rail links, prayer drones zooming through the air amplifying the great number of choirs and private prayers into a seemingly limitless chorus, and like a constant heartbeat the peel of bells echoes throughout.

I trust you shan’t take offence at our companions for the journey, Dam-Torsad is not simply any city it is the birthplace of everything sacred to Amarr – it was here that Dano Gheinok lead the Amarr over 15,000 years ago, and here that Amash-Akura begun our great empire.

Arkon’s voice quiet and reverential but still there are tones of a man who is proud to show a stranger the greatest treasure of his people and faith. He gives her a few moments of silence to enjoy the view, and then with an outstretched arm indicates for them to descend the steps away from the landing pad.

I thought we might begin by visiting the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sword, it is by no means the greatest of sights in Dam-Torsad. But the sisters there are dutiful and it is nearby, and with morning services beginning I thought you might like to view the processions and ceremony here.

He gracefully descends the stairs and reaching the streets he smiles at the noise and bustle. The crowd conversing loudly, occasionally conversation would cease as someone of import would walk by necessitating that those lower than them bow and show deference, but otherwise there was a constant noise of feet, prayers, and general conversation. Going almost unnoticed of course were the slaves in the crowd, some still collared.

To be honest Ms. Jenneth I didn’t plan out a tour exactly, as I imagined you to be someone who appreciates a more organic experience, I do hope that is okay?

He gives a look of genuine concern, and mentally begins to prepare a more traditional route.

There are of course must see sights that I wouldn’t deprive you of, oh and I know this absolutely astounding restaurant that does the best Ni-Kunni cuisine off of Mishi that we must have lunch at.

Arkon smiles and seems to have a lightness and jollity in his step – he is looking forward to showing someone around the city he adores beyond all others.

"No offense."

The small Achur straightened from a short flutter of interaction with an interface only she could see, a private holographic window containing a zoomed and view of the procession below (complete with ID labels and interpretive notes from various sources) winking closed. Other processes began preliminary examination of the local datasphere-- and the MIO operatives themselves.

She watched a prayer drone pass by.

"There's ... certainly a lot to take in. Faith seems to be a very public matter, here."

As she turned back to Arkon, another pair of figures exited the ship. Aria nodded to indicate her companions. "Kamieras," she explained apologetically. "PIE believes I may be in some danger. I trust this won't be an issue?" She glanced at the MIO operatives. "I prefer a more ... organic experience very much, yes. I would like to see these ceremonies a bit closer up, though-- if that won't cause trouble?"

"Some danger? Of course bring whatever security you need, though I assure you in Dam-Torsad none would dare - or be allowed - to spill blood."

He gives a confident smile, and turns back to the Kameiras giving a polite nod of his head studying them closely. But turning back to his companion on the tour he leads the way forward.

Arkon nods at her observation about the public display of faith, explaining with his hands as he lead them through the crowd.

"Faith is not simply a private conversation between an individual and God, it is a social undertaking, a constant struggle to show that the whole of society is worthy."

The MIO officials make the crowd give the two of them a wide berth. However Arkon spots someone off in the distance approaching.

"A Holder is coming, it is polite to bow as they pass."

The languid progress of the Holder meant it took them a little while to reach where Arkon and Aria walked, and their arrival was announced by the displays of deference. Arkon gave a small polite bow and the Holder passed by without noticing either his or Aria's behaviour.

"But yes it is not enough to live a righteous life, one must also ensure that society itself is righteous - this informs the very public nature of our faith."

As they near the base of the steps into the chapel Arkon nods.

"We can head up to one of the private viewing areas, near the back, out of sight of the rest of the congregation."

"It's not Dam-Torsad they're worried about."

The Kameiras are ethnically Matari, and are dressed in the Praetoriate uniforms that mark them as soldiers (and property) of PIE. They're subtly armored and not quite so subtly armed. If they're astounded at where their duties have landed them, they're doing a good job of hiding it.

"I'm used to thinking of culture and faith as intertwined, but I've never seen them so ... indistinguishable, even on the Emperor Family Station."

She bows actually quite deeply as the Holder passes.

"The public nature of faith in your society seems especially pronounced, here."

She nods acknowledgement of his suggestion.

"... Well, if you think that best. I certainly don't wish to cause any disruption, but I would like to see."

As they ascend the steps into the chapel Arkon leads them to the door on the left, slightly away from main entrance to the chapel.

"Of course we will be able view the whole ceremony quite easily." He smiles and indicates for Aria to enter first. "I can even ask to meet one of the sisters if you wish to have any questions about the ceremony answered by those involved."

He steps in after her and the way forward is fairly obvious. They are in a small slightly raised and closed off area at the back of the chapel, obscured by curtains and intricately worked stone and wood from the rest of congregation. However their own vision is not hampered and they can easily make out of the proceedings below.

Arkon takes a seat on one of the pews.

"You are most welcome to stand if you wish a better view."

Meanwhile, below the private observation area, the service continued.

The crowd was now standing.  Closer observation of its composition revealed stratification, that towards the front of the crowd, resplendent in finery, were Holders, Imperial Officials and Officers of the Imperial Forces .  Behind them, were their assistants and wealthy commoners.  And last, slaves and their handlers and other assorted persons in the Empire.

Incense rose from Acoyltes swinging censers and further above the vast open space above the assembly from hovering drones.  As the Prelate took his seat, the Abbess slowly proceeded to a raised platform on the side of the main altar, her hands folded and her face a carefully composed mask of piety.  A drone slid upwards along sides a wall of the Chapel until it among the various scrolls and datacubes that stretched upwards in innumerable numbers, it selected an old scroll, continued to move, and then selected a data cube.  Thereafter, the drone dropped down to a hooded Acolyte who took it in his hands.  The crowd remained intent in focus, again daring not to make noise or to seem inattentive as the robed security officers carefully surveyed the crowd.

Amidst a cloud of incense, the scroll and the datacube was then delivered to the Abbess.  She first carefully unrolled the scroll and began to read:

A reading from the Scriptures, Book II 2:1

Our Lord visited his flock and saw that all was not good.
Blasphemy and heresy ruled the land.
The Lord punished the sinners and drowned them in their own blood.
But the people of Amarr lived righteously and in fear of God.
Thus they were saved and became God's chosen."

She glances at the crowd and they intoned “By his Light and his Will.”

After a suitable interval, the Abbess re-rolled the scroll and inserted the datacube into a reader at her podium, and began to read again.

A reading from The Scriptures, Book of Reclaiming 3.19 - 3.21:

And the Lord spake, and said, Lo, my people,
 Witness, for I have made the worlds of Heaven;
And these worlds I give to you, My Chosen,
So Amarr shall rule the worlds of the Heavens.

None shall stand higher than you save the Sefrim,
Who serve Me as others shall serve you,
 For all things under Me serve one higher;
So Amarr shall rule the worlds of the Heavens.

 As Garrulor rules the skies; as Frisceas rules the sea;
 As Emperor rules Holder; as Holder rules Serf;
 Yet all under Heaven serve Me;
So shall Amarr rule the worlds of the Heavens.

She glances at the crowd and they again intoned “By his Light and his Will.”

Aria speaks quietly.

"On its face, that's a very feudal and strongly True Amarr-supremacist outlook she's preaching. A hierarchy of being: God, Sefrim, Amarr, everybody else. But ... don't some of the other ethnicities have a House, now? With potential to produce an Heir? Or do I remember that wrong?"

Quietly murmurs along with the rest of the congregation, but for the most part he watches Aria for her reaction to it. At her soft question he smiles, and answers in hushed tones.

"The Tash-Murkons are of Udorian descent, though Udorians are now indistinguishable from the True Amarr - culturally and physically - only an examination of familial descent could show it."

Straightening his robes a little he then continues.

"The chapel here and its Abbess are Sarumites, I thought it might be edifying to see that what is often imagined to be a monolithic and unshifting entity - the Amarr Faith - is in fact not so monolithic or unshifting. Our faith is a conversation, and so it does shift and change - the Theology Council administers what becomes new scripture, the Pax Amarria is under consideration presently - but even within the present theology there are wide and differing views."

He leans back in the pew a little more.

"We were the first to take to the stars, and it was our faith that drove us, and yet people imagine that our faith is somehow a cause for stagnation not revelation."

As the Abbess concludes the readings, three  Acolytes come before the Abbess.  The first is swinging a censer with aromatic incense, the other two retrieve the scroll and the datacube, respectively.  They process up the main aisle of the nave.  The Abbess from her place at the lecturn, and the Prelate from his chair, return to the central of the Altar.

“Behold the Holy Scriptures!  Behold the Word of God made Manifest for the Faithful!”

As the three Acolytes proceed up the Nave, the assembled fall to their knees as they process past.

The Abbess speaks:

“The first verse of today’s Scripture Readings teach that we – the Amarr -- are God’s Chosen”
“The Rulers and the Light of the Heavens.”
“The Amarr were Chosen because they lived righteously and in fear of God.”
“So too must we continue to live righteously and in fear of God."

She pauses.

“The second verse of today’s Scripture Readings teach us that –
“As the Heavens are Ordered by God, so are we as a Chosen People.”
“But even the Chosen, however high their respective selves may be in our Order,"
"They are slaves to God and answerable to God.”
“God is our master, all under Heaven serve God.”
“The Empress is his mouthpiece to us, the Chosen people.”

The Prelate calls out “Let us affirm the Word of the Scriptures!”

The crowd cries out “By his Light and his Will!”
Some strike their chests with their hands.  Others stamp their feet.

As the Acolytes conclude their procession, a prayer drone retrieves the scroll and datacube and returns them to the vast library on the walls of the Chapel.

"Those drones seem to have a lot of tasks to perform."

Aria doesn't quite seem to feel the need to join in with the crowd motion for motion-- at least as long as she's out of general sight.

"What ... is their function, exactly? I don't think I've seen anything quite like them."

"They record chants to re-play, they retrieve things (as you saw), they can project images from holy artworks or words to a particular chant." Arkon folds one leg over and continues. "Much as in any other society the roles can be as diverse as the technology allows."

He stands as the service begins to wrap up, muttering a quiet 'By His light and His will.'

"Of course many services do not use technology to such an extent - indeed the services I attend tend be rather more musical and active then these." He smiles warmly and gestures at the doorway, "Would you like to talk to one of the sisters? Or shall we continue our walk?"

After the Scriptures are returned to their places, the Prelate and Abbess conclude the service with a series of prayers and a benediction upon the assembled.

The Sarumite sisters raise their voice in song and the celebrants file out with the Abbess and the Prelate leading the way, the sisters following, the acolytes last.  As they process past, the assembly likewise follows - from front to back.

Outside the Chapel on the steps, the Abbess and the Prelate greet and speak with the worshipers as they file past and enter into the square.  After they conclude, the Abbess would remain on the steps until she makes her way to the adjacent administrative offices, and the Prelate to his.

"Services like this are held throughout the day at regular intervals." As he winds his way down the stairs back out of the chapel. "The first and last service of any day are always the most resplendent, and the most heavily attended, though."

As the crowd is exiting Arkon stands off to one side, asking again. "Ms. Jenneth did you want me to see if the Abbess or one the sisters could explain some more of this particular service to you?" He smiles genially.

"Well ... the sermon seemed pretty clear: humanity generally under True Amarr; True Amarr under Sefrim; absolutely everybody under God. I doubt being ... troubled by the likes of me would improve the Abbess's morning. Let's ... continue on, for now. Ah ... although, who are Garrulor and Frisceas? Are they Sefrim, or spirits of ... some other sort?"

Smiles and nods, "Of course I am sure the Abbess will be quite busy preparing for the next service and tending to her duties."

He leads the small group down the steps away from the chapel and into the throng of people busily making their ways to and fro. Arkon keeps his pace leisurely.

"Garrulor and Frisceas, according to most scholars and theologians, are Sefrim." He turns to check that the MIO officials and the Kameiras are still with them, and they indeed are. "Are you feeling hungry? We could stop for a morning snack before pressing on, otherwise we can wait until lunch."

They keep walking on through the crowd.

In another location on the island, the Torsad-Laur District, the late morning crowds are filling its narrow medieval streets between the mud-brick buildings of a prior age.  Some of the buildings have ivies and other climbing vines and small birds dart and in and out through their leaves.

As one passes through the winding streets, greetings and small talk can be heard between groups of neighbors, vendors,  customers, and even slaves and visitors as they encounter each other in the tight spaces and stalls.  All sorts of goods from across the Empire - and elsewhere - can be found here.  Plumes of smoke rise from the stalls and chimneys. A thousand smells wrapped around each other in the thick air from the myriad restaurants with cuisines from all the diverse and assorted peoples of the Empire.

Periodically, the alleys dip and pass through some of the buildings, the upper floors serving as bridges for the tunnels of the alleys below. The alleys then divide and twist in almost random fashion thereafter.  Some of the buildings’ windows have planters and the blossoms lean to catch what snatches of sunlight make their way into the alleys.  Banners or pinwheels on other buildings flutter or spin in the breeze.  Itinerant musicians can be heard somewhere in the distance.

Lunarisse Aspenstar Daphiti is clad in a red cloak, her long blonde hair peeking out from underneath.  Her boots can be heard as she quickly walks over the cobblestones.  She is thoughtful as she has just left morning services at one of the many chapels in the district.   She has a sizeable purse held tightly to her slight  lithe body under one arm, containing all that she needs for a day planetside, including a personal protective spray.

As she passes the Salvation Church Clinic, she gives a quick, pitying glance at the line of bedraggled beggars and former slaves queing up outside the mission and she tosses something into a kettle held by a supplicant for the mission outside its doors.   The supplicant says in a bored monotone and without any meaning infused in it “thank you.  by his light and his will.”  Then the supplicant’s eyes bulge as she sees the ISK credit left in the kettle by Lunarisse and blurts out “Empress!” Overhearing, Lunarisse gives herself a small smile of satisfaction.

Further down the winding street, after smiling at a group of children chasing after a ball bouncing between cracked statues, Lunarisse enters into the garment district and her eyes light up with possibilities as she sees their wares displayed in windows lining the ways.  Entering into one, she slips her hood back and is warmly greeted with two air kisses and a hug by the proprietor and such greetings are returned in kind.  The store is filled with fabrics and weaves and ornate and elegant dresses.  The proprietor seems pleased to see Lunarisse, perhaps the visit of a wealthy commoner and capsuleer with almost limitless coffers are warming her heart with thoughts of coins filling her registers.

Greetings exchanged, Lunarisse browses for a while running the fabrics through her hands with a content smile.  Then the time for haggling begins!

"Of course, I think you will enjoy Torsad-Laur district."

After a little while they find themselves leaving the modern area around the landing dock, the modern street narrowing and it's comfortable and clean pavement giving way to cobblestones worn smooth and dirty by centuries of traffic.

Arkon is a regular visitor to the Torsad-Laur district, finding the atmosphere so utterly laden with history, the maze-like streets winding this way and that, the sheer number of sights and people to see meant that every visit brought something new.

He waves off the hawkers of various purloined and other suspect items lazily, he chuckles a little that they don't even worry about the MIO officers trailing behind them. He slows his pace so that Aria can stop to look at any stall or store they pass, he is careful though to ensure she isn't swamped by hawkers.

"Torsad-Laur is one of the older areas of Dam-Torsad, it is also primarily inhabited by commoners and slaves." A small nod to a collared slave who walks by them. "It is usually simply called the Cauldron, I am sure you can guess why." They pass a row of stalls selling numerous varieties of street food. "You will actually find some very good artisans and craftsmen here, as well as the more dubious types of course."

Arkon continues walking at his slow pace.

As they move from clean pavement to ancient cobblestone, Aria's eyes slowly widen. By the time the hawkers have been waved off, those little almond-shaped eyes seem to be trying to swallow the world. Her lips curve gently upward at the edges, but this, too, widens slowly into a grin as they proceed.

No sooner has Arkon finished speaking than Aria is nose-deep in the nearest stall. Five seconds, and, she's moved to the next, and then the next, as one new discovery after another seizes her attention. She stops neither to haggle nor to sample, but accelerates through the crowd, sights and smells pulling her kinetically, like magnets in a rail gun barrel.

Only rail charges move in a straight line.

Her grin splitting the difference between academic fascination and childish wonder, the tiny woman darts from point to point in an erratic zig-zag, absorbing everything as though she were intent on devouring the entire district piece by piece. Between her small size and unpredictable movements, keeping track of her quickly gets to be a real problem.

Lunarisse steps out of the shop back into the busy alley, slipping the hood of her cloak back up.  This time, however, she is carrying a tote bag with some fabrics and a receipt for more fabrics and some dresses to be transported to her shuttle.  The shopkeeper cheerily bids Lunarisse a Blessed day.

As she steps through the threshold, she notes the time to herself and glances at the alley as if looking to see someone.  Not yet seeing who she seeks, she begins to browse the outside stalls and meander her way back into the main part of the Cauldron, perusing items of interest as she does.

Arkon chuckles to himself as he watches Aria dash this way and that. The MIO men seem to be worried and want to move closer to keep better track of her, but Arkon waves them back. He follows behind her at a leisurely pace with little apparent difficulty in following her movements.

In the distance he spots a familiar looking figure ahead of them. With a cheerful smile at the prospect of seeing Lunarisse once more, though mentally making a small prayer that she won't again try to ensnare him again in her matchmaking. The prayer offered he pressed on.

Indeed, Aria's orbit doesn't take her particularly far from the center of her party, at least with Arkon keeping track and it doesn't take too terribly long for Aria to reappear at Arkon's elbow. This may not be very much to Arkon's surprise, but it's certainly much to the relief of her Kameira escort.

A bit pink about the cheeks, but smiling happily, she strolls along beside him, though her eyes keep scanning back and forth among the buildings for any sights she hasn't already scouted.

Looks down at Aria as she finally stops her rapid orbit, and with a cheerful smile adds.

"Please by all means if you wish to stop at a stall let me know, I always have to stop myself buying things when I come here - I once found a genuine Adakul meditation manual here, centuries old. So many treasures hidden around here."

He continues to walk slowly along, a nod or smile to the stall owners who remember him or are just being polite. Even in the great din of life here you can still hear like a baseline prayers and hymns. Up ahead he can see Lunarisse Aspenstar their paths already set to cross Arkon continues walking forward.

Lunarisse sees Arkon and Aria finally.  They seem to be in conversation.  She makes her away over with a bright smile and perky step.  As she does, she also sees that Aria has 'followers' and gives them a cautious look as she slows down and composes herself into a more reserved countenance.

Arkon smiles and laughs, "Oh my yes, the fakes here are absolutely amazing - honestly I have knowingly bought a fake more than once here, simply so as to pay the brilliant artist who made it so believable." His smile still there as they walk on.

Seeing Lunarisse approach Arkon bows respectfully and rises with his characteristic genial face, features resting gently and easily, blue eyes regarding Lunarisse happily.

"A pleasure to run into you Ms. Daphiti, I trust you know Ms. Jenneth here..." A hand gracefully indicates Aria, "... I promised her a tour of Dam-Torsad."

Aria bows, formally.

"It ... probably goes without saying that it is a beautiful city, Praefecta...."

She thinks for a moment.

"It's lively-- as lively as I could have expected, and maybe a little more so. But, I also feel like I could have visited a thousand years ago, and it would have been almost exactly the same. Maybe the prayer drones would have had different designs, and a few buildings would have changed, but...." She lifts her eyes towards the tops of the buildings around them. "It seems ageless.... As permanent as the sky."

Again she pauses, considering.

"Of course, probably a lot of work goes into giving that impression."

Lunarisse, twitches slightly, keeping her face composed under the watchful eye of the MIO agents.

"I am sure, as always, the Empire's efforts are unceasing."

She adds in a more relaxed tone "You can find everything here, can't you?  There's all sorts of places to eat and things to buy.  I even can find antique books here.  Why, I almost came home with a miniature slaver hound pup. They were so adorable!  Have you found anything interesting to buy?"

Aria's eyebrow quirks upward at the topic shift, and at her superior's discomfort. Her eyes flick around the area-- to Arkon, to the crowds and prayer drones ... and alight on the MIO officers. Barely perceptibly, those eyes narrow, but she immediately turns back to the Praefecta.

"I hadn't thought of buying yet, Praefecta. There's so much to see! ... and I do prefer to travel light."

Given her complete lack of personal luggage, a handbag, or even pockets, that seems to be an understatement.

In the background, her personal data system receives new orders. The data it once simply observed, it now actively sifts, searching through duties and behaviors of the MIO, hunting for some exploitable priority. Nonlethal, untraceable, minimally disruptive, and ideally of no concern to anyone but the MIO....

A fit of unlicensed pamphleteering in the Torsad-Laur District, perhaps?

You were a minor distraction, gentlemen, but now you're in the way. Don't you have somewhere better to be?

If not, I may just have to make a place like that.

Arkon happily lets the conversation pass him by for the most part, listening and nodding politely but not saying anything. Instead taking the time to look around them for himself: and smile at the parent ushering a child away from a stall; or to chuckle at the dodgy stall owner try to sell something for far more than it was worth; in short to generally appreciate the life about him.

It always struck Arkon as being particularly strange that outsiders would accuse the Amarr Empire, and Dam-Torsad in particular, of feeling more like a mausoleum than a living breathing city. It was unthinkable to him, one only had to turn a corner and find themselves confronted with the multiplicity of beauties in God's creation! From the grand cathedrals to the humble homes of commoners or slaves there was a sense of grandness to it all... a feeling of immensity that he always found lacking in other cities in other nations.

He smiled at his thoughts and sighed a little contentedly before being pulled back to the conversation at hand.

"A slaver hound Ms. Daphiti? Oh! One of those miniature breeds, I have heard they are quite popular." Looking down at Aria he adds, "Please by all means if you see something you like I will be happy to have it sent on to you." A cheerful look around as he considers perhaps there are some things he needs too... a chuckle at himself as his blue eyes cast about.

Smiles and nods at Luna, "I had thought of it yes, being a Hedion man myself it would almost be remiss not to!" A happy little chuckle, and he waves off another hawker of wares that had begun to circle them. "Perhaps you would care to accompany us? I am sure Ms. Jenneth would appreciate another take on the sights we see on our way... one that maybe is quite so boring as my own."

The MIO men still attentively watch over the group, but Arkon seems entirely unfazed by their presence. His manners, conversation, and tone having no discernible difference.

"Truth be told though I hadn't planned out a specific route..." He looks around them as the constant bustle in the narrow street flows around them like a river around a stone. A hand extends out indicating for them to walk on, "Shall we walk and talk?"

As much as they progress through the district, they can see their surroundings slowly changing and evolving. The old brick buildings make way to newer concrete and polymer, higher constructions. Amarrian archways and spires glistening with fullerene electronic coatings tower above them, and the floor suddenly vanishes in favour of an overlapping network of walkways and strangely quiet motorways.

All the frontages start to harbor neon signs and various other adds that oddly contrast with the rest of the austere, yet grandiose city. But those alien looking discrepancies aside, the local architecture keeps its underlying majesty under which the average passerby can only feel tiny in comparison. The streets soon turn into convoluted covered mazes arranged over countless levels contributing to an general impression of verticality flowing along every spire and tower, as if trying to reach for the arid looking sky.

The local fauna also dramatically changes.  In the subdued light that still manages to light up the whole district and not totally foreign to the former atmosphere encountered in the Torsad-Laur bazaar, street sellers and various modern looking establishments contribute to form a hectic aura where most people busy themselves into various transactions or negotiations, most of the time about high tech or foreign products.

Establishments seem to offer plenty of services like virtual reality, bars, or even jacked-in scripture experiences gathering people together to share their faith and passion through collective VR communion, accompanied by a few dozens of khanid tech stores and stalls.

This is one of the various Amarrian concessions to the accelerating development of progress and a testimony to the Amarr pervasive interstellar society.

Arkon smiles as he looks up at the great towers which the Cauldron had emptied them out at the feet of. He looks over at Luna and nods at Aria's reaction - it is not an unexpected one, after all people imagine the Empire to be a static and immobile behemoth whereas the reality was something different.

"I believe some of the elements of the technology are reverse engineered from Sleeper tech yes, I am not however an expert on such matters."

The small group soon find themselves at the base of one the VR communion churches, the neon lights illuminating them and reflecting sharply off of the ground.

"Oh, I doubt it's sleeper tech.  While the military has some limited applications so far, it takes a while before new technology  gets vetted and makes its way into the Scriptures and common use planetside."

"Still, I've always liked this District.  We have trade agreements the Caldari and Gallente, of course, and it shows here.  The Empire isn't standing still no matter what people outside think! "

She glances at the VR venues and bars. "My husband always used to like to take me to districts like this when it was date-night." She adds with a slight quirk of the lips  "Don't look so surprised."

She pauses and then rattles them off like a school girl "Torsad-Laur, Torsad-Unan, Torsad-Edras, Torsad-Iphria, Torsad-Istha and Torsad-Melekel, are some of them I think!"

Arkon had been distracted for most of the conversation reading the little pamphlet, he usually got distracted quite easily thusly. But at Aria's question he looked up with a smile, and hands moving as he explained, answered.

"Amash-Akura is the founder of the Amarr Empire, he was originally ruler of only Dam-Torsad but during his reign managed to unite all of Amarr Island under his banner around six or seven thousand years ago." Arkon hands back the pamphlet, "He reigned for around one hundred years, and died after defending the newly founded Empire from one of it's greatest foes."

Steps closer to the VR piece and inspects it.

"He is responsible for much of Imperial law that is still present today, this looks like quite the interesting little interaction..." He observes as a small screen flashes what those who partake will experience, "Care to try it Ms. Jenneth?" He smiles happily

"And yes, it is someone a member of the Society - even a Peregrinans  - should know.  He wielded the wielded the Ametat in battle, where it is said that 'he struck down the wicked as surely as a sword', and wore the Avetat, which it is said 'turned away the deadliest blows better than any armor'."

She adds amused  "Make sure you have a drink and some food for sustenance."

She continues to walk with them and notices a sign of a certain establishment that caters to Caldari ex-pats and Empire based Caldari. She says lightly "My pardon, this is where I need to separate.  Do enjoy the rest of your tour."  She smiles at Aria.  "I suspect Doctor Sarain will be soon in his element, as Hedion University's campus is his next stop I think."

Once farewells are exchanged, Luna separates from the pair and after they depart, makes her way to the establishment where she is greeted in an extremely formal and gracious manner by a dark-haired, bearded Deteis.

The gleaming towers of Hedion University’s satellite campus in Dam-Torsad frame three sides of an large open square with rolling grounds filled with trees and flowers and criss-crossed with paths to and from its different buildings.  The paths are filled with students hurrying to and from their classes.  Other, more idle students are preoccupied with more sedate pursuits on the greens.  One student wearing sun glasses is flying a kite, while another is painting.  One group of students is huddled listening to one of their more animated brethren.

On the fourth side of the square is the rest of the district.  Two  commoners charitably described as “late middle age” are making their way from the VotC Hall (Veterans of the Reclaiming).  They are dressed in khakis with jackets and hats bearing patches indicating that one, a ni-kunni named Johanes Beaumonte, is a veteran of the Imperial Navy, and other, a True Amarr named Vincentus Azizora, is a retired Paladin.

The two veterans cross the street to the square and take a seat at a game board flanked with two benches and begin to play, moving the pieces from time to time, as they chat and watch the much younger students.

Smiles as the reach the sign for the maglev train station to the Hedion campus, he seems genuinely excited at returning to a campus of the old alma mater.

Then upon hearing Luna's comment of her parting ways his joy dims a little, and bows deeply.

"Ms. Daphiti it has been a pleasure as always, I hope to see you soon. Blessings for your day."

Once Luna has made her goodbyes and is a little while away Arkon turns to Aria and gestures to the steps up to the platform,

"Shall we? The train journey to the campus is a short one."

The train is modern construction, elegant and refined clearly even public transport is done with much attention to detail, and a constant low noise of hymns can be heard throughout.

Aria bids her polite goodbyes to the Praefecta, then follows Arkon onto the platform.

"Um. A ... question, Your Honor? That ... last district ... what is it built on? I ... mean, on top of? With the way this city seems to treat history, it ... seems as though they must have found the very last open plot of agricultural land where nothing important ever happened." She stares thoughtfully out at the city. "Or maybe some relatively new, low-income tenements?"

"Oh no, Dam-Torsad as we see it now is an amalgamation of several ancient cities - most districts were once individual cities before Amash-Akura united Amarr Island." The doors slide close. "From memory that last district was originally an Udorian settlement." He tries to remember more details as the train smoothly sets off.

Smiles, "The districts of Dam-Torsad are reflections not only of the history of the Empire, but also of the diverse ideas at play within it - the Udorians, though now no longer distinct from the True Amarr, have long been seen as modernisers and utilise new technology to realise the prosperity and virtue of the Empire."

The train begins to slow, approaching a station.

"The Tash-Murkon royal family are indicative of this attitude still. As I have said before the image of the Empire as a monolithic and static entity is ill-founded - if we were committed solely to one vision would we revise and update our Scriptures as new revelations of God's plan and creation are made?"

And there's hardly anywhere that something important hasn't happened at some time or another, even if there didn't seem to be a lot of general reluctance to tear things down.

The train glides to a stop, and people begin to file out - noticeably this is not the mad rush of most public transport, but even here the movement is orderly and by social class. Thus Arkon and Aria are among the first to leave the train.

Arkon nods at her statements and then taking a few steps down the platform and eventually exiting onto the street opposite the Hedion campus in Dam-Torsad. Smiling Arkon looks at the glittering towers, a place of academia was always instantly recognisable - it is never the buildings but the atmosphere, the noises and conversations, that betrays its purpose.

"Welcome to the Hedion campus of Dam-Torsad." He smiles at Aria, the MIO men are still there respectfully at a distance. He leads them closer to the campus, across the street, and near the two veterans playing their board game.

Meanwhile, the two older man playing a board game chat idly, but their attention is soon drawn by the animated student who is beginning to speak louder and more vigorously, enough for bystanders to hear.

Vincentus frowns as the name of "Professor Emeritus Albizu Zateki" is heard.  "That fool kid better be careful.  Didn't that fellow leave under a cloud, too edgy and liberal even for Hedion University?"  He moves a piece.

Johanes stares at the board, his brows furrowed in thought. "He was a fruitcake and turned out to be one of them Blooder denumerations.  I heard he died." He moves a piece.

Meanwhile, a bell chimes, signaling the change of sessions.  The kite flyer is now winding his string down.  The artist seems lost in thought staring at the students, her paint brush dangling in the air like an unpunctuated sentence.

The kite flyer makes his way over to the students behind the speaker, while at the same time, the artist makes her way to the other side.  Suddenly, after the kite flyer taps on the speaker's shoulder, badges are flashed and it's clear that the pair are MIO agents.

Johanes grunts "Well.. that was predictable."

"Your move, Vincentus."

After a brief protestation, the agitating student is bound, hands behind his back, with the kite string turning out to be a strong nano-fiber weave.  The artist is taking names from the other, rather shaken, students and writing them down on her sketch pad on the sketch of the scene that she was making previously.  She is using her brush, which turned out to be a directional microphone, to take and record statements.

Vincentus shakes his head "Well that's a shame, that whole lot will need to be re-educated now." He moves his piece. "I hope they don't make all of his students go through it."

Johanes responds "All those brains and not an ounce of common sense."

Vincentus simply sighs and moves his piece and gives Johanes a nod.

Watched the scene unfold without any noticeable reaction on his features, his hands remained clasped gently in front of him, and blue robes rustled in the light breeze.

At Aria's question he looked down at her with a gentle gaze, and his tone as ever warm and genial gave his reply, hands instinctively moving as he answered.

"That will depend on their guilt in the late Master Zateki's heresy, if they were merely unwitting students in his classes who did nothing wrong beyond that misfortune? Then they will simply be sent for re-education, to ensure that they were not corrupted." He walks forward onto the campus some more. "If however they are discovered to have been more actively involved, or if they are found to be corrupted beyond redemption? Then the MIO will do what is necessary to preserve the good of the Empire and the Faith."

Arkon wanders across the grass, feeling a wonderful sense of being at home, "I am sure you appreciate after your incident on Templar Vadam's warbarge the threat Sani Sabik thought presents to all in the cluster..." He smiles at some passing students who bow, "... Like a gangrenous limb, you do not let the infection spread - no better to remove it if there is no other way to save the body."

Chuckles a little though he seems puzzled by Aria's question but walks on. At her next inquiry, "That student may have thought his ideas benign out of ignorance, however that does not make them so."

His hands moves as he explains, "Our lives are precarious, narrow is the path of the Light we walk in, and dark shadows surround us always. Sometimes we do not notice our hands or feet are even in the dark. I'd say it seems like a ... troublesome way to live, only I guess I'm not in so different a place. Trying to avoid dipping my toes in what I used to call the Black..

"Would this scene have played out the same on other worlds?"

Looks back at the group of students still being questioned, "No all of them are students as far as I can tell, they will probably be brought in for questioning later." Smiles and then looks forward, walking on along the path towards the buildings.

"When we walk our mind constantly without our knowing watches for the small cracks or roots which may trip us, the vigilance required to ensure the safety of our soul can be no different if we learn early." His hands moves as he explains, "Though it does require more inward reflection and consideration than that analogy, but this is not a bad thing as an examined life is not a worthy one."

Pauses for a moment and then replies, "On other worlds it may not have been the MIO that had taken the young man to task, it could have been the Holder or the local church or police, here in Dam-Torsad though the MIO has a very strong presence in order to preserve the peace and order of the city." Smiles.

Aria looks around at the surrounding campus. "Be careful what you learn," she murmurs.

"It's a beautiful city, Your Honor. ... Really beautiful. Is there ... more ... that we should see?"

Smiles, and doesn't comment on Aria's observation instead joining her in looking around the campus. At her question he shakes his head good naturedly,

"No, you are most welcome to visit the more tourist friendly sites at your leisure - they are all signposted and they offer some very informative tours." Gestures towards a path leading away from the campus and slowly walks along, "But perhaps you would care to enjoy a walk along the seaside with me? It is always quite bracing and refreshing I find." He chuckles and winks, "And there is a great little cafe with good views where we might grab some afternoon tea."

Smooths his blue robes absentmindedly as they walk along.

(( I am happy to hand-wave here Aria, and just say they enjoyed a nice walk and pleasant conversation, if you want to draw this to a close. But if you want to RP it out I am also quite happy, I will follow your lead. :) ))

((Well, Aria's about given up on getting the MIO out of her hair-- among other things anything that would actually get the job done is seeming like a potentially unhealthy prank, if not for Aria than for her relations with the Amarr, so she's about ready to call it a day and go visit a pleasant cafe. She'll be a little subdued, but cheerful enough.))
