Title: GLORIOUS HOMEWORLD REMASTERED
Post by: Mizhara on 26 Jan 2015, 14:50
They sort of 'sploded. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4LdlLQ7izo)

I'm all for the "no preordering" thing we're generally doing as gamers these days, but sometimes you just have to say fuck all ya'll, and throw that money at the monitor.

The good thing is that it will bring the game into the spotlight again and thats good.

I'd say the good thing is the fairly major upgrades letting us play the game on modern systems, with modern resolutions and aspect ratios, with new and functional multiplayer and so on and so forth. Remastered audio, better textures, redone voice work in some cases for that matter.

As graphics are among the least important things in making a good game, I do not see why I should not just play the originals instead.

Because the originals are almost unplayable on modern systems, requiring enormous amounts of work. They also need a lot of work to get the multiplayer working, etc etc.

This remastered version also include the originals, only modified to work on modern systems, should you be a purist.

If the first games were like in 2D and dating back from like 1990 and whatnot i would be like omg a modern version but here... If its just a few textures and audio....  :|

For the difficulty to play them on modern systems though damn i did'nt know that... And for the MP part, even if MP is actually like 2% - 5% of the players in RTS and 4X games (so not much at all), that's good !

The thing about certain games is not the graphics or the audio or anything like that, it is that the Design Team just hit some magical combination of design features and balance.

This is Homeworld. For some reason the combination of story/gameplay is nigh-perfect and the sad fact that we leave such games behind as our systems change is very sad.

Thus far, it is stand-out in it's genre. Nobody has beaten it. The same can be said with MOO2.

I tended to think the same when it came to graphics, but frankly once you got into the 3D modeled era... things quickly started aging horribly. For instance, I was watching the original Homeworld intros and the pixelsoup on the low-poly models were glaringly bad. Those are horrible textures and I frankly have to say the new footage makes the experience seem far superior at the moment.

While graphics aren't the end-all be-all, they do matter in some games. There are exceptions of course, like Fallout 3/NV in my opinion. There they hit a very sweet spot where the engine, the design work and so on just fitted perfectly together to simply look gorgeous no matter how long it has aged. It fits the style and it is a very pleasant experience even entirely unmodded to me.

Homeworld though... I don't think I could play it as the original anymore. The setting and game just doesn't have the same quality where it just -works- regardless of graphical fidelity.

Games can transcend the aging graphics in many cases, but I don't think I'll ever agree with those who say that it doesn't matter. It most certainly does matter, even if it's not always the most important part.

For me it matters too. After all it is my work and what i work on all day long...

But homeworld textures are not horrible, they are low res by now standards but still with an awesome art direction that got blandly copied again and again afterwards by most scify space ops...

I would personally feel more the need to upgrade 3D models for third person or first person games, which are the ones aging the most... It is not a secret why it is easier to play to an old 4X like MoO graphics wise than a thing like fallout... Imo.

Edit : to clarify i am very happy to see that game getting a bit of cosmetics added to the true additions like working on current systems, but it seems to be thing these days to 'remaster' games by just making them available on steam or whatnot and charging the customer full price for that... GoG does it for ridiculously low amounts of money and i am certainly not going to praise gearbox until i see their price. My gripe is that in its current state, loking a lo better than the original or not, it just look like what any serious mod would do to a game... I generally would expect a remastered version done by a professional studio to bring more than that, like new camera controls ( which was terrible in HW1), UI tweaks up to today standards, etc. Then we would be able to actually criticize in a good or bad way, compare to the originals...

While I'm happy for the re-release and the visual updates I'm going to pass. I think it will be a nice experience for those unfamiliar or for a trip down memory lane.

I don't know if the RTS gameplay would hold up to today's scrutiny, also I seem to recall some extremely unbalanced tactics for multiplayer that weren't addressed (but this was 15 years ago memory a bit hazy).

This was kind of that first, wonderful 3d engine RTS that blew me away with a compelling storyline, atmosphere, and amazing visuals.

I'd be more interested in a new game carrying on that tradition!

Having watched more about it now i feel a bit unjust and it seems that the game was actually modified a lot more than i thought, well beyond simple modding...

That's good ! They also talked about a new IP of theirs directly inspired by the HW franchise and now i am intrigued.
Title: Re: GLORIOUS HOMEWORLD REMASTERED

Well they were originally going to just do the bare minimums. Some minor resolution and playability upgrades, etc. Then as they fiddled and worked, they suddenly discovered they'd rewritten the entire renderer etc. This remastering is a work of love, from what I can tell.

Well, all this talk about Homeworld made me want to play some Homeworld: Cataclysm, which I have always favored above the "original" ones. So I dusted of the CD and installed it on my new PC that I bought two weeks ago and, to my surprise, it runs fine without any technical issues.

So, I am going to do a pass on this 'remastering' title; I got my Homeworld fix covered now. :)

Yeah, Cataclysm was developed/published by someone else, so the rights never fell into Gearbox' hands and thus they can't remaster it, sadly.

I still have my original copy of Homeworld and it's pretty unstable on my system. I'm very glad this is coming out, especially since I lacked the patience to finish the storyline the first time.

I remember that being a thing right? I remember not actually having to do that much fighting, I would spam the capture ships and just steal all the enemies to grow my fleet.

Just another 13 days until we can relive this epic... wonder if it will take me 2 weeks to get past mission 4 in Homeworld 1 again.... I seem to remember having had some nasty problems with it... not that I can remember what those where. Time dose wonders for those sorts of things.

Mission 4 is where the difficulty curve suddenly climbs up yeah. I remember it took me a certain time when I was young to beat it properly... To get stuck at mission 5. xD

Would probably be a lot easier now that i'm older...

Waiting to see how well game is patched before deciding to dive into purchasing and competative multiplayer.

From what I've seen on the relevant forums there's a lot of balancing to do. Combining HW1 and HW2 units has been sad face times for HW1.  There's been a lot of proposals to rework HW1 fighters to behave like the superior HW2 counterparts, and I've seen some good calls for HP buffs, etc.

If gearbox is responsive I'll take the plunge :)

Yeah, the new HW1 is more like a mod for HW2, it's running on the same engine. So a bit of the stuff that worked in HW1 doesn't really work in HW1 Remastered. Like formations and strike craft in general.

Multiplayer balance is going to need some work. HW2 stuff generally owns the early game, but then late game the HW1 stuff develops something of a building advantage.

In better news, the Complex mod for original HW2 is up on Steam, and they are working on the remaking it for HW2 Remastered.

I had been holding off from buying this game because it's a Gearbox production. You know how they botched up Colonial Marines. So how does this game hold up compared to the original Homeworld?
Title: Re: GLORIOUS HOMEWORLD REMASTERED
Post by: Lyn Farel on 28 Feb 2015, 07:20
If they use the HW2 engine and UI for HW1, then it's all good. The HW1, as good as it was as a game, had terrible UI flaws (especially camera wise).
Title: Re: GLORIOUS HOMEWORLD REMASTERED
Post by: Karmilla Strife on 28 Feb 2015, 09:16
My only UI complaint is that Eve has conditioned me to be used to right-click menus for everything when I'm in space...  I have only been playing HW1 remastered and have noticed that strike craft wings aren't as awesome as they used to seem. No fuel does get rid of a minor tactical element but I don't really mind.

Eh, it's mixed. Overall, it's the same game, similarly awesome. Improved graphics and all.

On the other hand, strike craft have gotten messed up a bit. Formations basically don't work anymore. HW 2 strike craft approach targets, make an attack run, and then break off, fly away, do it again. HW1RM strike craft do the same thing, and they don't stay in any sort of formation when they do it.

http://www.youtube.com/attribution_link?a=N0kfIg-7FIU&u=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DCx0uxR2kZy8%26feature%3Dshare

the Evasive setting doesn't really work/exist anymore, you are instead left with the HW2 aggresive/defensive/passive options.

HW1 modeled projectiles as actual objects and strike craft would dodge out of the way, making it hard for big ships to hit them. HW2 modeled projectiles as dice rolls, meaning that any big ship has a chance to hit little ones. Suddenly Assault Frigates are really good at killing Strike Craft.

So yeah, hopefully the modders will find some way to correct some of this, or Gearbox will patch it to make it more like HW1. But in the mean time, I'm having a great time. It's still an awesome game, even if some of the awesomeness has been rubbed off.

Thats a shame for the HW1 physics... I understand why they changed that for HW2 but...

The good thing, the big pro, though, is that HW1 remastered now uses the full HW2 UI and camera, and that's invaluable imo.
