[CONTEST] Capsule Cross Section Artwork
« on: 05 Dec 2012, 13:07 »

Hello! So, let's be honest... we've all wondered what would be inside the capsule, right? The way the engine looks, the shape of the embryonic sac, where the little spots for stuffing a small duffel bag are. There is no CCP approved nor player made cross section of the hydrostatic capsule. I want to change that.

I'm not sure whether to make this a contest, or a crowdsourcing effort... but I am willing to drop ONE BILLION ISK - OR $35 USD of my own cash to finance the drawing of a full color and full detail capsule cross section artwork. What do I want from you?

If you're an artist, I need your support. I'd like to see what sort of ideas and sketches you can do on the topic. Submit some rough sketches of what you are willing to draw. If you want inspiration for how to draw it, take these examples, or some more professional examples.

If you're not an artist, but you want to see this happen - pledge ISK or $$$ to the cause! I'm looking for significant investments, but whatever you can afford to pledge will be helpful. The more money we can gather, the more likely we can get a full quality artwork. ISK is a universal currency among us, but it restricts us to only hiring artists who play EVE. If we pay in RL money, we can hire an outside professional.

Why the capsule? Well, it's common to all of us. Fed, Caldari, Amarr, Matari... we all use capsules. I'm hoping to start here to reach out to everyone who enjoys EVE RP and worldbuilding. Perhaps we can get CCP's attention and they might create an official one.

If you're neither willing to pledge nor draw, maybe you can help me work out the logistics of handling the money and commission? I've never actually ordered an art piece before, nor handled a crowdsourcing thing. I might go to kickstarter and see if we can gather the money for a commission or something.

It might be a good help to start by analyzing what we can actually find in the capsule (internal systems, etc). What kind of stuff there is besides the pilot and the pod goo...

examples.

The capsule is right here on the top-right ! Remove the probot and insert capsuleer  :P

Well let's consider what we have available ingame to start with when flying it.

  • A shield generator
  • Armor plating and internal hull structure
  • Sensor cluster for obvious reasons
  • Capacitor transformer unit and storage cells
  • Warp drive
  • Sublight engines & Fuel tanks
  • Navigational computer for Autopilot
  • Communications array with NEOCOM
  • Transneural Burning Scanner
  • Reactor core (for power grid)
  • Main Computer (for CPU)
  • Self Destruct explosive charge
Now let's consider what keeps the pilot alive.
  • Oxygen supply & scrubbers
  • Water supply & recycling
  • Onboard nutrient supply tanks
  • Human waste disposal system
  • Medical systems such as detoxification, stimulants, sedatives, etc
  • Pod Goo scrubbers
  • Heat radiators to keep the whole pod from freezing
And finally some extra bits if there's room left?
  • Tiny cargo area for stowing clothing?
  • Emergency rations and/or supplies for crash landing?
  • PLEX card reader device?

All of that can be imagined to fit inside the pod, albeit tightly. consider the miniaturization of the equipment, and many of these systems might be tied into each other or combined.

Keep in mind that any artist who wants to see how this thing looks in-game can easily make a free trial account, dock in a station, go to CQ, and have a look there, for the 'open' pod, then undocking in the pod to get a look at it's outer features.

There is also a trailer that shows a capsuleer getting out of one, so that might give more clues to it's general shape.

Ask CCP Falcon if his fiction is anywhere. I remember him doing a technical short on the capsule at one point, but as the old forums have gone ~poof~, so has that. :|

Morwen's Law:
1) The number of capsuleer women who are bisexual is greater than the number who are lesbian.
2) Most of the former group appear lesbian due to a lack of suitable male partners to go around.
3) The lack of suitable male partners can be summed up in most cases thusly: interested, worth the air they breathe, available; pick two.

I already sent him a mail, letting him know what's up here.

How long is this on? I am quite interested, but the next few weeks are looking to be mighty busy for me.

I like the list of things required, which looks at the general categories you need. I'm wondering how you might merge some of those in an actual process.

You need oxygen, for instance, but you're "water breathing" it from the perfluorocarbon hydrostatic fluid. Is oxygen stored separately and perfused into the fluid, or is there some process within the fluid itself which converts waste products and produces oxygen? We know the liquid is nanite-rich and acts as a kind of external immune system.

Exactly. Many of these systems could be combined like that. Take for example the heat from the reactor core, which could in turn be bled into the pod goo itself to keep the pilot from freezing.

Update from CCP Falcon. He's going to forward this idea to the managers of the wiki and see if they want to persue this some more. No direct word on the art project, but we should start seeing some lore popping up about the inner workings of the capsule.

Just a side-note about the commission part. There are some incredibly talented (and professional) scifi artists that use DeviantArt to manage some of their non-contracted commissions. The caveat being that since the best and most reliable ones have their day jobs working for publishing and development companies, their commissions tend to be rather expensive.

Food for thought on finding an artist.

Neato idea.

I am curious though my PF is weak here, but how much does anyone really know about the pod and pod tech? These are basically Jovian ships we are talking about, given as gifts to us all?

Are pods manufactured by the Empires in a normal manner or are the sort of limited run BPC sorts of things that we don't even know how they work? IE the Jovians say 'here you go, don't look in the box' kind of thing?

*shrug*

Either way so long as they are representatively Jovian and slimy sounds great :)
