Title: Signature inspiration / concept / perception / yada yada
Post by: Jozana on 26 Jul 2010, 05:58
Personally I'm a sucker for signatures, always paying too much attention to them.
I've noticed there are a few different groups of people when it comes to what they're looking for in a signature:
It's really not hard to see when looking at a bunch of signatures that some came to being from entirely different perspectives on this matter than others.
Just a handful I like listed (yes, I am including my own because if those weren't good examples of what I liked I wouldn't be using them either):

So what does a signature need to do for you? Does it require meaning? Should it represent your preferences on a certain subject?
And of course - I don't get you, any examples?

Edit: PS: I'm sorry if I know you well and you have a great signature and I left you out, but I didn't wanna start off with a massive list of 100 signaturs either just because I think they're all cool.  ;)

I thought the last one was entertaining, but what I look for in a sig is how well it captures people's eyes. I usually don't have more than a name and a corporation in mine, because I haven't seen quotes that weren't cliche or overused or emo.

Do you find catchy to be mostly clear and simple or something more vibrant?

Well, they both are to me. One is visually stimulating with lots of bright lights and textured stuff while the other takes a clean, minimalist approach. Your eyes see a blank canvas and naturally gravitate towards the symbols and words. I like them both >.>

Those are some of mine that I've made over the years. I don't necessarily have a ton of artistic ability, but I think they get the point across.  :D

They sure do, nice work on those.  :D

I should find all the old ones I did again, 'cause I used to be a lot better at it than I am now, but I forgot to transfer the files somewhere along the road. Though I have backups of everything, so I should be able to retrieve them, I just need to take the time sometime.  :s

The first four in the original post are a few I made, but that's been recently after I didn't touch Photoshop for some years.

PS: Lillith, what is this I see here... you never told me about this... sort of err... material involving you - explain yourself.  :o

Kal made a whole series of them. I loved it, so I used it for a long time. Also this one is getting updated for NeuroGEN. So I am likely to start using it again. Here at least. :)

Mine sort of plays off the way I see myself, sort of thematically, lots of blues, blacks, greens and whites, cyberpunk imagery throughout, Lain is mah homegirl,

Obviously, they can do many things.. and so, while I played I had individual sigs for a number of different reasons. Over time though, they do communicate some essential things : something about me as a player, and something about me as a character.

Below you'll find a sampler of some of my sigs.

That's one of my earliest sigs, from the time my character was still affiliated with the Blood Raiders.

I think the key here is attitude... and humor.

Starsi was a popular thing at some point, so here I'm showing my support. And I guess ever since that, it's been "GoGo Yubari... sponsored by Starsi!"

Representing the Intaki.

Here I wanted to try a different visual style. More chaotic, more messy and with the tagline I've since associated with GoGo.

Of course, sigs also reflect your in-game allegiances and you take one of those "group sigs" as your own.

... and sometimes they do that while preserving your own particular flavor. That's actually probably still my favorite. The mood, the colors.. and an RL friend of mine in the pic.

You have some really nice ones in there too.

I'm inclined to say I like this one most of all of them:

I think for a first attempts at the style it worked out very well, 'cause it's not exactly the easiest thing to do either. To make something chaotic, yet sufficiently recognizable.

I need a new one, tbh.

Unfortunately, my copy of photoshop went down when my last PC bricked.  :|

I've always sort of wandered between 'official' looking info-packed sigs and more picturesque stuff. I wish I could find some of the old ones, but after 7 years most of that stuff has been lost to the void.

What I'm about to say was not initially part of the topic's attention, but who cares really.
I guess you can always explain what you'd like to have and maybe if anyone of us is bored enough to have a go at it later myself or anyone else can try and make you something.

Most of the (many) signatures I've had relate directly to the corporation / organization I was in at the time.

A brief list in no particular order:

A product of ventrilo conversation with Graelyn and (I believe) Theophilas:

The basic PIE starter sig:

PRETA signature:

Syneneose Accord Signature by Mebrithiel:

Symbolic sig I had put together by Ricardo:

Another sig by Ricardo (and at present, my everywhere-except-alliance-forums signature):

And on the note of that last one, my nowhere-except-alliance-forums signature:

I've gotten into the habit of drawing mine.   It snowballed out of control.

Eve sig that started it all:

Aion
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/izumizagari/littleizzy.jpg)

Global Agenda
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/izumizagari/assaultsig.png)

Allods
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/izumizagari/palasig.png)

And  an old random something.  Only certain people will "get it."

I've only ever had a few signatures in my life, on EVE-O I've had one, and elsewhere, a couple more. The ones relevant to EVE (some more than others) are below.

The oldest signature I've ever had regarding EVE. Got it as part of Eve Defence Force in ASCN. Sadly I never got to use it - I did not RP at that time and did not post on CAOD, so the only place this one would see use was ASCN's forums. Sadly ASCN had over 5000 members at it's peak and there were a few accounts to register etc. There was a waiting line, and all the while the war on BoB was going at the time. It never really saw use as I soon left ASCN and EDF, EDF itself soon moved on from their Legion-based internal organization structure.

This one I made myself, cut it from an EVE fan-art piece I found and was supposed to use it as a general EVE-sig for my other main, Arivana. That never happened and I ended up using it mainly to 'promote' EVE Online on other forums.

This one was the first and so far, only sig I ever ordered from anyone and the only one I've ever paid for. I consider it a 100 million well spent, however it's outdated now, sadly. It saw some use on the EVE-O forums where I used it while arguing or commenting on the summit.

This one I'm rather proud of. Back in Agony Unleashed, I grew tired of only having text-based sigs, so I went out of my way to make one myself. As AGONY is a NASI (Not Agony Shoot It) corporation we were kind of all over the place blowing people up, I felt the sig underlined the “we are here to murder you” tendencies of the PVP university. Ayalen assumed I'd found it somewhere and were surprised to learn I'd made it in paint. Sadly it's a bit to thick and don't conform to forum regulations except on Agony's forums, and I'm not a member there anymore.

I'd like one as well as a forum banner for my corp =)

Something involving Angels that is NOT anime for the banner and... surprise me on the sig.
To be honest, I kind of like the futuristic looking ones.

I'll pay for this stuff, whoever decides to do it, but I am a big fan of the OP

Heh, there's some of my work in the OP.

I do a lot of my own stuff. The exception to the rule is the current one, which is done by bobbehck.

Shame I don't do more of it now. Lack of motivation, like a lot of things.

After some use of the Chribba's excellent Eve-search, I have found most of my EVE sigs through the years.

The first, from my time in Amarria Auxilia, was hosted on Geocities, and is lost to the void forever.

Once ATCR was off the ground, Graelyn was associating a lot with undesirable (pirate) types and unleashing them against the Empire's foes. I tried (unsuccessfully maybe) to convey this 'subtle' change.

Not your average Amarrian Loyalist

This was made for me when Aegis Militia started. Initially, it was part of a set in which the sigmaker put sexy faces in to represent us. I thought mine looked young, fruity, and distinctly non-amarrian, and so I slapped my ugly mug over it. She was not happy with this decision.

CEO, The Aeternus Crusade -- Aegis Militia

By the time I changed again, I was a lot older, wiser, and wielded a bit more power as AM Alliance grew. The change reflected this. Despite the glaring spelling error, it's still my favorite one I made. It just felt...warm.

Aegis Militia - Fleet Admiral, Minister of Public Affairs

This one was made for me, and I held a contest for sigmakers to compete for (35mil or so for first, nothing special). I had set a lot of specifications and things to put into the sigs, and yet this one guy just put the name, and logo, and the phrase (which he came up with) and I had to have it, so he won despite him ignoring most of the requirements....I'm sure the other good folks were not happy...I loved it and kept it for a very long time.

I'll see what I can do. Usually though I work best when I know the 'feel' of what I'm doing, and I'm used to I-RED by now.

Although, should still be do-able. What would you like it 'themed' on, Benjamin, the Assembly, Moira.
What do you want mentioned in it and what not. :)

Assembly, my character's political views, a mix of social and market interests, with a dash of combat since it's relatively new to Benji.

Also, nice deep blues, whites, and greys are his favorite colors.

If you're making sigs, Jianni, I could use one, same price.

Something Intaki and Mystical. Idama-esque.

Maybe you could use Intaki characters.

Maybe greens and golds? I feel they are Intaki colours.

I have started playing with signatures a little myself. I have been using GIMP, and it's a wonderful program considering it is FREE. I do have PS, but I am traveling until December, and only have a laptop with me. But still think I have been able to produce some fairly "decent" results. Anyways, enough blabbing and on to results.

Hopefully soon I'll improve and be able to incorporate multiple images together smoothly.  :D
