It's not breaking news that all of CCP's Live Events have been in the Euro Time Zone for quite some time now, which makes sense since their offices are in Iceland. I've been understanding about it, accepting it, and just moving on past the fact that I and other Americans can't take place in a single live event due to work, school, and other day time activities we need to get done as adults.
But now, the potentially single largest and most epic event is about to unfold over Luminaire this Friday at the same time American's are getting their first cup of office coffee and getting to work.
What the actual fuck man. :|
Like I said, I know it's a European based office and all, but couldn't there have been at least SOME middle ground? I know I'm going to get flamed and blamed for not being understanding and being told 'well why do the Europeans have to deal with bad hours?'
But I frankly don't care. This giant event is about to happen and I and many others will only be able to watch forum updates IF their workplace doesn't filter it. God dammit. :bash:
-
I'll probably be in english class.
kinda sucks yeah. vov.
-
It does suck, but such is the life of international gaming.
To be quite honest, it's one of the few games I've played where timing ISN'T centered around Americans, so perhaps it's karma?
-
Karma? We're missing the biggest event in Eve since the Seyllin incident and you're bringing up karma?
Seriously?

I understand you're upset, perhaps the joke was in bad taste. For that, I apologize. It was an attempt at levity.
-
If it's any consolation, friday afternoon UTC isn't even good for employed, studying, or otherwise commited Europeans, which is a pretty large proportion.
-
For what it's worth, a good chunk of the Euro's will also miss the event, or at least the start of it. Afternoon UTC is pretty much right in the middle of the Workday here in the UK. For me, I'll likely log in around 3-4 Hours after the event starts so it'll likely be over.

It's fine, I'm sorry I snapped. It's just this one event is HUGE, like Clear Skies returning from Jove Space to suicide gank another Titan's hydrazine tanks huge, and I'll be reviewing patient adverse event reports for a second rate drug. Fuck man, just fuck.

That.
I get home at 19:00 (18:00 ETC) and miss most of the stuff as well. The ones benefiting the most out of it must probably be middle-east/asia.

Lol. Since we all had such a big role in that event, and it totes didn't happen entirely during downtime...right guys...right?
-
The timing is awful for Euros too.

No we didn't take part in it, but was still a world shaping event. I'm trying to say that this event is equally as world shaping AND it's happening live.
Not during downtime, not as a patch, not as an aesthetic addition to the static models in the game, but LIVE. And apparently, both American's AND Europeans are getting shafted on it.
-

And the AU/TZ. Woot!
-
Middle-east/asia you say? 8)
I might totally come and mess around
-
Someone is always getting shafted by TZs. I'll most likely be running late for the event as well, since I'll be facing troubles convincing my boss to let me go early. ;)
-
While it wouldn't help me any, it is pretty clear when peak server hour (http://eve-offline.net/?server=tranquility)s are: 18-2100 UTC.
It would seem reasonable to try and have the majority of events during that time block.
-
The most likely explanation is that CCP needs more hands on deck to run it than it can justify keeping around outside office hours. Sucks, but that's life.
-
The event might also last for several hours of fighting, bringing in fresh players as they log in and others log off.
Also it's a big cluster, things are going to happen far away and at awful times for many of New Eden's inhabitants.
Live events team has stated several times they will be making effort to do special and more events for the US crowd, let's not forget this means many of them staying up ridiculously late, after work hours, just for us to get our space rp in.
I'd rather have Eve Devs run a big event 'all hands on deck' at the best time they can, rather than a skeleton crew that might diminish the spectacle.
Additionally I also like that events will happen at odd times and locations, it makes little sense for every RPer to be free, at the location, and participating. It's a big cluster out there.

I'm starting to think that they may be triggering this event early simply because they want it to be over by the time PAX east kicks off, so that they have a completed, wrapped-up Dust-EVE, player-storyline event to show off to the masses.
-
Depending on how many people show up, they may also be thinking of time dilation effects. Not sure how many players need to be in a system before they start slowing the clock, but an event this big? In highly-populated space? It's not impossible. Heck, people might start showing up before the tenth salvo is ever fired, depending on the number of bodies (so to speak) thrown at the problem.

There is a clear solution to this problem:
Call in sick.

No can do. I oversee a lot of drug trials and I need to be there. Unless I notify my super that I'm taking off a WEEK or two in advance, I'm not going anywhere. Also I was sick last week with whatever was going around the office.
Bottom line, RL/Career/Professionalism will and should ALWAYS come before a game. But that doesn't mean I won't speak about my annoyance at the lack of ability for working people who can't just take days off to take part in world shaping and completely epic events.
And this isn't rage or anything directed at you Aldrith, I'm just venting so, I apologize if this comes off as prickly.
-
I would give calling in sick and working from home tomorrow serious thought if I had not already worked from home on Tuesday due to inclement weather and poor driving conditions.
I'm personally ahead of my schedule and assignments at work, but my supervisor likes piling stuff on as soon as space appears in the queue, so I'd still have shit to get done. :P
-
I simply can't afford to call out.
-
As someone who has missed all but one Live Event due to TZ issues, not to mention a gazillion player-organised events that Cia(c) would have broken her neck to get to, I understand the frustration - and am very glad that something is happening in a timezone I have a chance of attending for once.

If the Titan starts moving, use an MWD plated trimark Mega to BUMP IT TO HIGH HELL.

Well, I still see Falcon late in the evening quite often the rare times I find the time to log in, and that is already a proof of dedication to me. Maybe he can actually use his CCP accounts out of work, but I seriously doubt it... Can he ? Any of the actors ?
Take it as a personnal feedback from someone working in video games, also. People always expect us to do overtime since after all, "it must be a cool work and you are all passionated about what you do, etc etc". Some companies even more than the average joe. We are paid almost nothing, we work like hell to get things done in time, so yes indeed, you must be quite motivated and like what you do.
But it is unfair to assume that because it's a game, game employees always have to put the game before everything else. Not saying that you actually stated such a thing, but I find it rather rude in the first place. Maybe I put too much interpretation in that topic, too. vOv
Indeed, RL career/professionalism will and should always come before a game. That's the case for CCP actors too.
-
If he's on late I think he's usually at the office. He usually comments about having to "head home" when he's logging off.
-
And you know what makes me annoyed?
A certain someone, who troll about my bad english IC-ly.
*Looks at this certain someone in this forum with incinerating look*
Annoys so much that im about to start suicide podding in highsec and <censored> my sec status.

What? You seem perfectly understandable to me.

True, but iirc (and correct me on this if I'm wrong) I think the Atlanta branch did a lot with the Sansha live events in the US TZ. Still stayed after hours, but at least it wasn't omgwtfamidoingupthislate!?!?! kinda after hours.
-
I think the Atlanta office either closed or is now 100% WoD
-
Someone's always getting shafted by the TZ. It is what it is, make the best of it and proceed.
Besides, thinking about this from an IC perspective... how would our characters even know that tomorrow was "majorly important" to begin with? Sure, there's heightened tensions in Luminaire, but they can't exactly form up a fleet for the time the event is going to begin, the one they don't know anything about.
/me shrugs - Don't sweat it.
-
Not having this on Saturday is retarded. Plain and simple. Dont like working weekends MMO ppl? Dont work for a 23/7 MMO.

For once, my days off and PST have coalesced into some awesome timing. 8)
