I suspect it got a bit of a bump from the comic (link in spoiler tag above) followed by readers sharing it.  It is going viral, I suspect mainstream US media will pick up on it in a few days to a week.

It started popping up on Facebook last week, I think. Didn't gather enough momentum to go anywhere. Hopefully it doesn't this time either.
